tbqh it's hard to say. Half of SD is definitely "west", such as the black hills and even the badlands. You also have peaks over 8k so that is decidedly un-midwestern. You also have large reservations of squalor (rosebud and pine ridge) which is western. However, eastern SD is basically western MN and you can't tell the difference when you cross the border.
Like most US states, the geography changes significantly within its arbitrary (and typically very large) borders, lending itself to be hard to classify.
