Are first world countries slowly regressing backwards as a society? Poverty is rising across the entire OECD, purchasing power is declining, decent housing for young people is a thing of the past, everyone is getting sicker and more unhealthy, even life expectancy is declining slightly. Civil unrest and general population dissatisfaction with government entities is also extremely high.

Does anyone else get the feeling that humanity has already reached its peak and we're going into a slow death spiral?

Yep capitalism has reached its limits

well be fine m8

These economic things are non-problems. Just wait and see the shitstorm once robots can do any job more efficiently, 24 hours a day and for free. Now that's when the shit hits the fan.

close to nothing. I am not just talking about dumb robots that can mow the lawn for you, I am talking about AIs that could do the paperwork of a fully staffed large company on it's own.
All humans (maybe except scientists) will become practically worthless on the market.
>>
>>59730270
Probably. The problem is is that countries are being run to profit the richest the most. I don't mean this in a "hurrdurr tax the bankers" way, but big companies want cheap labour so the governments are letting in huge numbers of immigrants, pushing up house prices and you know the rest.

You can't be against this though because you'll be hung and quartered by the left who complain about the same issues but don't want to fix it. We've done so much good the past few decades but countries more recent decisions are basically self-harm.

>"Social progress" rising while economic progress simultaneously falls

Gee, it's almost as if the rapid expansion of identity-politics-fuelled self-interest brought on by feminism, multiculturalism, and LGBT rights erodes any basis for the lower classes to unite around defending their economic position

> even life expectancy is declining slightly
Where exactly? Globally life expectancy has been steadily rising since industrial revolution.
>Decent housing for young people
This is just result of easy credit that has been given for past 20-30 years. And it frightens me, there are countries (Sweden, Finland, USA and many more) where people pay 0.5-1.5% interest on their mortgage, that isn't normal. Should the rates hike up to 3% we are in deep shit globally, it's 2008 all over again, but not really end of the world.
>everyone is getting sicker and more unhealthy
At least here tobacco and alcohol usage is all time low, we have even managed to slow down weight gain.
>Poverty is rising
More or less inequality is rising, wealth is concentrating more and more to the top 10%. But it is true, the golden age of 90s is long gone, at least until we find the next Internet which would boom the world into new era (nanotechnology? Biomedicine?).

I feel like the problem is more or less state of mind type of problem. Whenever you read news how GDP of USA only grew by 0.5% people go fucking mental as if it's the end of the world. It's nothing but a fucking number, a highly inaccurate number even. But when people panic this creates a domino effect where it leads to even lower numbers and then people stop buying because that's what the news told you to do.
>>
>>59730615
Yes but you're forgetting 30 years ago they thought we'd be in flying cars. We can now watch films that are set in "2015" with space travel and shit because scientific progress isn't quite that simple.

Think about your job too. Could a robot do it? Maybe, but it would be a robot specifically made to do that role. Now think across all jobs and all the different robots you would need. It won't be viable for business for a long time. Plus computers break all the time so you'll still have armies of people looking after them.

I do want robots though so I can finally get a partner who loves me reciprocally.
>>
>>59730431
american government spending is much greater than western european countries, which makes you more socialist than we are
>>
>>59730649
Adam Smith himself argued that mechanization and industrialization would create greater income inequality, and that wealth should be redistributed.
He's also recognised as the great mind behind the free market in case you didn't know that.
>>
>>59730769
i don't see how that makes europeans not socialist
>>
>>59730649
And we all agree on that. But European countries aren't socialistic. Socialism means people own the means of production, here means of production is owned by well whoever, private people, states, cooperative societies.
>>
>>59730799
socialism implies big government, which we do not have, but you do
>>
>>59730759
>Maybe, but it would be a robot specifically made to do that role.
What if not? What if one AI advanced enough could literally do anything we wanted it to do? Heard about the modern AI that defeated the chinese Go champion? It didn't have any solutions for the game pre-programmed, it was only made to be familiar with the rules and it developed the best strategy on it's own, while playing the game first time in it's "life".

Finland has one of the world’s best education systems, with no tuition fees and also giving free meals to their students. The literacy rate in Finland is 100 percent. Finland has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Like Denmark and other European countries, equality is considered one of the most important values in society. Whereas in the Netherlands, government control over the economy remains at a minimum, but a socialist welfare system remains. The lifestyle in the Netherlands is very egalitarian and organized, where even bosses do not discipline or treat their subordinates rudely.
>>

>Socialism means people own the means of production
I mean workers* own the means of production. Obviously people always own them.

You have the liberal government to blame to selling our land to the Chinks, privitising TAFE, and introducing double dissolution.

For a government party that claims to have Australia's economy at its concern, its ruining it by privatising everything.

Doesn't help that Donald Trumps plans with Nationalist economy will likely fuck over America as well.

>>
>>59730858
Heard about it, but it picked moves based on what was most likely to happen. When the other guy didn't play "properly" he won. They will still make mistakes, and to program one AI that advanced we will need many advances in technology we currently don't have. It will still be a generation or two before we get anything good. It also didn't play it for the first time in it's life, otherwise it would have been crushed. It played itself millions of times and worked out strategies from that.

People will just fuck anything that isn't perfect. The flash crash in 2010 a good example. What you put out into the business needs to be PERFECT and we're a long way from that.
>>
>>59730270
Any more I just keep wondering why it's worth it to live in this day and age. Aside from the economic factors ensuring my life will be substantially worse than the prior few generations, the state of the things that keep me living are total garbage. Art is being overrun by morons who can't provide anything new and meaningful to the conversation, to the point where "complicating" XYZ aspect is considered a worthwhile pursuit. In literature you have to have a social justice bent, or write stories of style with little substance. It's stagnated entirely, folding in on itself to the point where the actual original concept of art is lost. As a populace, we pour more money into the worst given form of any type of artistic output, and try to squash original thought harder than before. Original thought had it's struggles before, but it had to fight moral conservatism and the like, not it's the new left and the right trying to censor everything.
I mean this in earnest: why live? Why go on when the future is going to be worse in every way?

I don't mind being called a socialist fuck because there really does need to be a massive redistribution of wealth back to the people who will actually spend it in the small, local businesses that employ people, and then finally get more money circulating without needing to borrow for stimulus

Poverty is simply relative inequality, i see no problem with inequality rising when median incomes are rising as well. This is a non issue.

not really

with fusion power and automation we'll reach a golden age

clean unlimited energy for the whole world and abolishment of all boring labour.

automation is happening but fusion power is the moon landing of our time. governments around the world should be pouring in billions to make it happen.

>You're describing a communist utopia

yeah basically, the end result of communism is what everyone wants, they just have a retarded idea of how to get there

it's perfectly possible to do in a free market economy, albeit a fairly social democratic one with strong governments, safety nets to ease the impact of mass-layoffs, and free educaton to re-educate people in a world where skills lose their usefulness at a faster rate.
