I feel like learning a new language, so I wanted your opinion on what language is the closest to English? Kinda in terms of how Spanish speakers have a basic understanding of Italian and Portuguese

>>59621618
I've heard Dutch is the easiest to learn if you're a native English speaker.
>>59621618
This should help you OP.
The further you are away from England, the harder the languages get.
Dutch. If that British girl would start drowning she would beg for help in dutch instead of english.
>>59621618
German is basically a more precise but far more intricate version of English. Also highly modular.
>>59621618
American

Frisian must be from an isolated area where Old English was never raped by French.

Higher? Go read something in Norwegian and tell me how much words you recognize or seem familiar to you. And Old Norse is even further from English
Vi (we) har (have) många (many) relaterade (related) ord (words).
English is pretty much just a corrupted version of swedish desu.
>>59623827
>många

>>59623827
Learning Norwegian i came into this conclusion aswell... its all similiar AF, even how the sentences are formed
>>59623774
but they gave a lot of basic words to english that are common, like go, and some pronouns
What is the name of the people that gave birth to German and English when the two languages split off in the 5th century?
>>59623680

If you want to learn a language simply for fun you shouldnt ask youself whats easy but instead ask youself what would bring you enjoyment.
>>59621618
Dutch surprisingly
>>59624272
I want to learn German. Should I go for it?
I've once heard English refered to as "the hissing language" before. Is that accurate? Does it sound like we're hissing to non-natives?
>>59624352
The basic vocab is easy but you'll hit a wall once you get to the grammar. If you don't give up at that point you'll make it and then its only a matter of practicing.
Dutch and Afrikans, German to an extent but Modern English is actually closer to French than German.
Definitely Afrikaans, Frisian and Dutch. Norwegian and Swedish have very similar sentence structure and common sounding words. I spent all 4 years studying German during my degree and German helps with the above mentioned a lot. Surprisingly I can read Danish quite well with never studying the language. Once you understand the special characters for the Scandinavian vowels, and the silent consonants it becomes easy.

Study German.
Technically Dutch is the closest relative of English but Dutch has several problems: 1. Dutch sounds like anus 2. Dutch has no literature 3. Dutch people are degenerates 4. Dutch really do sound like anus
>>59623859
>Learning Norweigan
LOL
>>59621618
Easiest on the basis of similar grammar and vocabulary; Frisian, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish and Afrikaans.
Easier based on vocab; French, Spanish, Portugese, Romanian, Italian and Danish(Danish is here because of "mouth full of porridge" phonology.)
Least easy;
German because of complex grammar.
>>59623774
Old Norse and Old English were mutually intelligible to a degree. Icelandic speakers do better at reading Old English than Modern English speakers.
>>59621618
French

There's no way he could know Anglo-Saxons and Vikings understood each other, he didn't ask them and he wasn't alive at the time. He doesn't know shit about Icelanders too, they can't even understand Faeroese and he thinks they can understand Old English.
