Every other human civilization has come up with some form of slightly-rotting, alcoholic beverage that 1) gets you fucked up and makes this stupid life bearable, 2) gives people something to do and 3) becomes a social currency, easing certain social interactions. American Indians never developed an alcoholic beverage. That means that they didn't spend the aeons learning how to tolerate an alcoholic beverage, both in the bodily sense and in the social-regulatory sense. They were behind the 8-ball on that one, whereas literally the rest of humanity had figured that one out and got used to it.
