It's the norm.
A kanji is made up of smaller parts that determine the meaning.
Some of them are too archaic to be readily visible, but in the majority of cases having a ground base knowledge of kanji means that, even encountering a new one, you can make an educated guess at both its meaning and pronunciation.
After a while you will read past a kanji you don't know with the right reading without even realizing it.
