I finish my Masters degree soon and I've been to Japan twice for 2 months in total and its fucking sick and I love it, but I don't see how I can justify a long term thing. I've done everything in my year and I'm 21 so I can justify a break for a year or two and still be in a good position for my age.

I got a chance to go to Japan through my job, with the trip paid for(just the actual plane fares, not hotels or stuff like that). Basically while travelling I'd be taking pictures of Japanese buildings, for reference at local constuction company.

1. What's a good way to learn some Japanese before I get there? Are Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone decent?
2. I have some friends over there, so what makes for good souviners? Local handicraft/sweets or Moomin accessories?

Learn Katakana and Hiragana, while they have limited use, Katakana will make things fun as you can try and work out what it is in English, and its actually sorta useful for some things as lots of food etc... The main thing though is it will get you to grips with how Japanese is spoken because all words are broken down into these alphabets or syllabaries(sp).
Kanji is pretty useless to you maybe learn some common ones like meat or fish or whatever.
Most stuff has English about so I'd learn the basic hello goodbye etc just so you can feel more polite etc... Also some key words you might use, the usual stuff. Numbers can be pretty useful also.
My first time I knew little more than a phrase book I had and I got by fine, less English then as-well.

There are three types of people when it comes to Japan.

Semi-informed: People who might have seen an anime when growing up or followed one of the big animes, or even saw something on netflix recently. They probably will think you are cool for being serious about Japan and maybe curious, they aren't really aware of the negative stigma... probably.
Normal: Literally like 98% of people and almost every 40+ adult: They have the image of Japan as some Asian country, therefore will probably think you are smart or cultured for learning this. Where i work most people think I'm more intelligent than I might be because i study this "impossible" language in breaks. Its actually a really good thing. These people think Japan is cool, they don't think of loli and stuff they think of sushi, big cities and technology. Lots of people i know actually want to visit Japan. I almost hit my Japanese textbooks from my parents when i came to visit them after picking up the language, but realised that my mum is hardly gonna go "Haha your learning Japanese you fucking weebshit, what you gonna do later watch some high school moeshit and go masturbate on /e/." We are really jaded from using this site. Literally no one knows about anime, they don't know what weebshit is. If they did it would be social suicide to ask you about it because you could just deflect it and make them look like a weirdo. Hide the power level. I was watching something on my Laptop and my dad saw, he just asked why i was watching pokemon at my age and I said it wasn't and he said sure and walked off.

Also with the language its great fun. Much more fun than a European language especially if you like the Kanji. I really love drawing them out etc calligraphy and that, its interesting.
I've always wanted to learn a hard language and Japanese is the best imo. Compared to the other super-hard ones it has by far the best resources for doing so and also Japanese speakers are relatively accessible to talk to online.
The main thing though is passion, it isn't like French which I can do in a year this thing takes ages. While Mandarin was my original goal (I can't deal with the tonal stuff though honestly) there was no way i could learn for years and years for a culture (rip old china) and a country I just didn't like or care about.
If you like linguistics finding a passion or otaku for Japanese is a golden opportunity to really take learning it seriously. If you are decent with rules and grammar etc its actually pretty easy imo

If you're just starting, read manga. Stuff meant for younger kids is simple, but Shonen Jump should be fine. And there's tons of material for that.
