either way its not relevant, because the USSR did everything worth doing, the moon's only relevant because it was 'o wow look they on da moon!' and the plebs were appeased

Oh I'm sorry. For all this time I'd thought Arpanet was nothing more than a shitty computer network. I had no idea it was capable of transferring pictures, videos, music and interactive web pages which allowed sites like 4Chan and practically every website there is now to exist. Funny you don't hear about the American engineers from the 1970s sharing their funny meme images and cat videos on Arpanet with each other. They were probably doing it so much.

Does Italy have a space program?

Anyways the point wasn't who was first to accomplish those things; the point was who was ABLE to do them at all.

All throughout the Space Race the Americans and the Soviets went back and forth, with the Soviets usually in the lead. One nation developed a new technology, then the other tried to demonstrate they could do it too.

The Space Race concluded with the lunar landing because the Soviets weren't able to reciprocate. The back and forth ended as the Soviets did not have the knowledge or the technology to put a person on the moon, despite trying and failing multiple times.

US didn't win the space race because of getting to the moon, and they didn't lose it because the Soviets did a bunch of other stuff. We won it because the USSR couldn't keep up with our spending on anything. We had more money to throw at NASA post moon landing while the Soviets were nearly bust. The ONLY claim that Russian space industry has now days is that it is actually doing space travel as opposed to NASA which has become much more research focused.

The basic aim of the war was to stop British impressment of American sailors which was accomplished, also we lost no territory and made no concessions to London, plus they sold us the Red River Basin which proved a big whoopsie because it was full of iron ore.

Also the European states finally took the US seriously as a nation after 1815.

That's actually quite the mathematical feat, calculating the point a probe will land on a comet 10 years from launch. An early mistake could've taken the whole 10 years to manifest itself, and it did cause it landed in shadow so it couldn't get power. Manned missions to the moon take only like 3 days pretty sure.

"The War of 1812 was a military conflict that lasted from June 18, 1812 to February 18, 1815, fought between the United States of America and the United Kingdom, its North American colonies, and its North American Indian allies. Historians in the United States and Canada see it as a war in its own right, but Europeans often see it as a minor theatre of the Napoleonic Wars. By the war's end in early 1815 the key issues had been resolved and peace came with no boundary changes.

The United States declared war for several reasons, including trade restrictions brought about by the British war with France, the impressment of as many as 10,000 American merchant sailors into the Royal Navy,[5] British support for Native American tribes fighting American settlers on the frontier, outrage over insults to national honor during the Chesapeake–Leopard Affair, and American interest in annexing British territory.[6] The primary British war goal was to defend their North American colonies; they also hoped to set up a neutral Indian buffer state in the Midwest that would impede American expansion in the Old Northwest and to minimize American trade with Napoleonic France, which Britain was blockading."

Snipping off pieces of Canada was merely a side quest in a war that had multiple causes. Besides, since Britain ceded the (iron-rich) Red River Basin, we actually did succeed in that goal.
>>
>>58980455

That's the overall cold war though, not the space race. America arbitrarily defined what the finish line to the space race was and declared themselves victors. >Also the R-7 was bigger than our birds because they couldn't miniaturize nuclear warheads as much as we were able to

About this. By 1960, the Soviets already had smaller warheads so a giant ICBM wasn't needed anymore and besides, the R-7 was totally impractical as a missile, but Sergei Korolev cleverly satisfied the Soviet military's demand for an ICBM in the mid-50s (because they knew the US was developing one) by designing a rocket that would have been useless for military purposes, but which did happen to make a very good space launcher, so much that it's still flying today. Clever bastard he was.

No, it's not that we had completely different purposes for making them, different designs, and functions, we just totally stole their amazing technology that failed half the time.

I don't understand why it's so hard for you guys to understand that the world's largest national economy on the planet has made significant scientific accomplishments. If you throw enough money into a developed nation with a large population, something is going to be produced.

I genuinely believe your resentment for our cultural and economic dominance is clouding your reasoning skills

It really wasn't though because Soviet spacecraft were designed to be as automated as possible, so all you had to do was strap the cosmonaut in and let the computer system do all the work.

Besides that, Valentina Tereskhova's performance on Vostok 6 wasn't all that great and the postflight mission reports and official histories of the Soviet space program had any number of derogatory, misogynistic comments on her flight.

Typical communist thinking. If you aren't first you are literally last in a two man race.

>Amerifats won the space race
The concept of the space race is one sided.
The soviets were just exploring until America showed up, went to the moon and said THIS WAS A RACE ALL ALONG AND MOON WAS THE FINISH LINE. USA WON! WE OUT!
Sure, they played with the idea but the soviets had little in actual plans to go to the moon.

It's like you're the first person to go hiking in uncharted territory, some other dude shows up behind you takes a sharp left, stops and goes "I WON!" while you keep exploring not really knowing what he's all about.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venera
The soviets could have went oh, fuck moon, we landed a probe on Venus in the 70's, the space race ended here. The space race was a feel good thing the American government came up with so that the people could sleep at night.

Who said that? It's exactly about results. And there is nothing about "communist thinking" there, you don't even know what does it mean.

>Sure, they played with the idea but the soviets had little in actual plans to go to the moon.
Korolev began drawing up plans for the N-1 in 1959, but the Kremlin didn't greenlight any manned lunar program until 1964 which was already far too late to possibly catch up to the US.

The fact is that they weren't trying to do anything but quick space firsts for propaganda and had no real, long-term plans as NASA did.
>>
When I was younger, I always thought that spacecraft looked like computer animations when they got out of the atmosphere, sorta like in Space Jam, where objects switched from being real to animated depending on where they were.

NASA isn't sending people to space anymore, the former soviets are. In fact, americans are hitching a ride aboard modern versions of soviet rockets, and launch from the same starport Gagarin did.
Soyuz is russian for union (the soviet one).

Your move.
