The north didn't think the south would last that long. They were pretty good fighters despite being poor. Once the supplies were cut off that's when the south had their shit fucked. Majority of the people in the south were too willing to fight. They would have continued expanding because 'muh manifest destiny' was a popular idea back then.
I like the south. Reading about the civil war made me realize that the south ran circles around the north despite their low numbers and supplies. Eventually however, the north won because they had more supplies and manpower. The south can only keep up for so long.
