I don't usually post here but this seems like the best place to ask. as I'm sure everyone has noticed, British slang is very popular on 4chan. non-brit/aussie posters use words like lad, mate/m8, etc constantly and I can't help but cringe at that shit. if you're not British or Australian and you use British slang in your posts you're no better than white guys that try to sound black by using words like "homie" and "dog".
anyway, my question for you all is simple. why British slang? is brit slang really that much better than American or canadian slang? are British posters perceived as cool guys so other posters want to emulate them? please let me know what you guys think of this phenomenon, it's been bugging me for awhile.

Personnally speaking, I learned English mostly by talking to people online, and most of them happened to be British or speaking British English. Saying "dude" or "bro" has never sounded natural to me, while m8 and lad flows naturally.

Another thing I forgot to add : due to the large number of American movies and tv shows, American slang is starting to sound unnatural. Like it's how this or this character from this show is speaking. On the other hand, most exposure to British English is done through actual interactions with people, so it feels like the English people are actually using.
