Not even true, we became part of Spain in 1556, became de facto independent (and recognised as independent by France and Britain) in 1609 and de jure independent in 1648.

Oh please, we were barely late anyway, we came in two years in out of six -- it's true that we weren't there to help with the Battle of Britain, but we were there for almost all of the offensive operations of the war, excluding the very beginning of the North Africa campaign. The claim that we only showed up to fight the Germans in '44 would imply that literally everyone only started fighting the Germans in '44, seeing as France was not the literal only campaign against the Germans. North Africa, Italy?
That and we basically took the entire Pacific front on our own, with only help from China (who didn't have a lot of offensive capability) and some help from ANZAC.
