It's stupid to compare Chinese investment to colonialism. China is doing to Africa exactly what Japan and other countries did to China when China opened up to the world. Most of their investment isnt even in resource extraction. They just ask that loans for development be backed by exports because these countries don't have the foreign currency reserves to pay them back. It worked well for China, and it's working for Africa. Angola went from a D to C credit rating because of Chinese investment for example.

And the US does a lot of trade with Saudi Arabia. Nobody is perfect and China isn't trying to be altruistic. But their actions are benefitting the average African, even in the horrible dictatorships. Zimbabwe just performed their first open heart surgery in over a decade because of Chinese equipment and education provided to their doctors. There was actually a study done, you can somewhat accurately predict how long a democracy will last by its GDP per capita. There's almost no point trying to install democracy in poor countries because they will be overthrown in a few years. What Africa needs is economic development first, and China isn't afraid to give them the capital for that while the west uses sanctions and conditional aid to work on social issues and democracy first and economic development second.

"China's Second Continent" by Howard W. French provides a more opposition viewpoint to those two books, but in the end it still concludes that China can be an enormous help to governments that negotiate better deals, and can hurt countries with shitty governments that use Chine to prop up corruption.
