South Africa and Rhodesia failed because they didn't realize the need for territorial separation between whites and blacks. As a ruling class, they enjoyed having an ample supply of cheap black labor at their disposal. The downside is that said black eventually rised up, especially when their proportion of the population started to increase even further.
