From my middle-school to English 2 college course all I did was to memorize the verb "to be" and all of the tenses.

It's not common. There are a lot of terms preferred by people over that particular one.
For example, the latest fad among men I can recall was referring to each other as "daddy" (papi). Don't know if they still do that.

Also we call each other "fag" a lot. As in:
