I've been studying the English language since the third grade, so it's been about 14 years. I also watch a lot of American movies, and try to read a book every month. I even started thinking in English.

Honestly though, I had no idea my vocab size was that big. I almost never use big words, I just know what they mean lol

It makes me sad and a bit frustrated.
Japanese are intelligent and hard-working, yet all those years of English lessons don't seem to stick. There's something wrong with the methods used, but for some reason there is no progress.
I'd suggest that you stop trying to learn English like they taught you in school and read comics and novels instead.

English has a lot of redundant words. Mainly because it took so many from other languages, and because some words were class based. Higher classes used a word and lower classes had a seperate word for it.

That and we're making up new ones. Texting, twerking, googling, fapping...

None of them are necessary but they're sometimes useful. Having a large functional vocabulary makes you come off as smart. It's a bit like good looks, good sense in clothing or a pleasant voice. People can't help but get the impression that you're intelligent if you use language well.

For example one of the words is raiment (clothing). m8 it literally just tests how many words you know, not intelligence. don't get pissy just because you didn't know every single word.
>>
>>58702757

I know what archaic means, and that's my exact point. For something to be archaic means that it has fallen out of common use, and therefore is not something that one could reasonably expect to run across in modern contexts.
>>
>>58702997
'Appearing in a period piece or video game evoking old times' is not what 'common use' means. That is in fact what archaic means. Obviously people still have to know what the word itself means or the effect is lost.
>>
>>58702947
i answered it honestly but knowing specific words is not equal to knowing that much words. i think it must be more close to 5-6k most.
hell i don't think i know 15k words in turkish.
>>
>>58702596
>Elizabethan period or older
>Not archaic
Still not uncommon though
>>
>>58703040

I disagree. For something to be archaic it likely is something that one would need to look up to understand.

For example OED also lists yclept as an archaic word. a simply google search for it indicates that it is a marginally forgotten word.
>>
>>58703232

just because something is old doesn't make it archaic. "water" is an ancient word, but it is not archaic.

Archaic implies that it is not used in common parlance anymore.
>>
>28600 words

25000 but its a stupid test. Too easy to check words you think you know but don't. Should have to actually give a definition.
>>
I'm okay with this, although it would be nice if I'd be able to increase this number... The words used vary from visit to visit, so I'm not sure if these kind of tests can show results which are stable enough. I've never visited an english speaking country, so may be this is the issue, I'm not sure.
Side note: I had a shit ton of words with a french origin in my test. Disgusting 2bh...

I admit knowing almost no words on the right side of the second page. Where do those words appear? I read some fictional novels by H.P.L. His language was the closest to them.

22 200 words, not that bad desu

No my friend. It relies on you to not cheat to impress your friends on fortran.org. There is nothing wrong with this approach because only pitiful men with small penises would cheat.

I cheated only on two words - potboiler and something I forget. Thought potboiler was related to cooking but it actually describes something like all Rolling Stones albums since Steel Wheels.

Russian is a more verbose language than English though?

I remember a French dude saying how English is an easier language to use than French and most people there prefer to use English terminology for things because it's shorter and easier to pronounce.

I guess it is pretty decent for a non-native, right? Though I feel like I should do better.

thanks to all these transparent french words though
>>
>>58709053
That's what I'm thinking as well... There are far too many words on the second page which are either outdated, insanely uncommon/rare or just of french origin. The only word with german roots I've seen was leitmotiv.
I'd like to see a more balanced test.

Average Russian knows 50-60 thousand words, whereas people with higher education know in the range 80-100 thousand. And yes, in the Russian test many of the words outdated as well

For sure English has more of different words than Russian. It happens to me all the time that I can't find a suitable Russian replacement for an English word that I would like to use. Might sound fishy coming from somebody who's a pleb with barely 15 000 words though.

Most words in dictionaries are nouns, adjectives or verbs that describe something (a thing, real or abstract, or quality) so differences in grammar mean jack shit.

Lmao at the native english speakers who get less
>>
>>58710996
I doubt this is true

A lot of people see words that they've seen before and automatically think 'I know this word', without knowing the true meaning

Also they see words similar to words they know/have heard of and tick it too

we've already had this thread and all french posters consistently get 20k+, because a good third of the "complicated" words are common french
>>
>>58711054
I was supposed to post this way earlier but ended up proofreading my answers by checking the definition of the tricky ones. Alternatively, i also went and looked up the meaning of all the words in the list that confused me, so this whole exercise enventually made my vocabulary even greater, even though it took much more time.

P.S. a lot of these words come from French, so it kinda makes the test easier for baguette munchers
