It's not just limited to corruption from other religions and cultures, but the very nature of modern existence and modern technology. For example, the religion (as a social doctrine for individuals) did not exactly "evolve" for the realities of a multi-million human society cramped into 100 square kilometres, nor the fundamentally divorced urban living of today where people may not see any form of nature for their whole lives, or the completely compartmentalized and specialized nature of goods production today. This technological process is inexorable, so the degeneration is almost innate to human existence.

This was the case in the past too with the caste system after all, the metaphysical matters were put in the hands of a dedicated class of thinkers who had to take their role seriously. And they did, in fact it's my belief that a similar system of logical thinking was applied to metaphysical matters - and what we consider "esoteric" knowledge today is merely the remnants of a system of perceiving reality that was very logical, akin but not like what the scientific method is. Unfortunately as time has progressed there has been devolution as this knowledge has been lost, and what was once a system of thinking has turned into a system of rites and ritual. So as time has progressed there has been a collapse in the role/responsibility of the 30% responsible for leading the rest. Because the fact of the matter is, such a caste/class of people cannot fundamentally exist in a modern industrial or post industrial society (hell, I think even agricultural society itself was not exactly what the original practitioners of Vedic religion were)
