Welfare state can mean anything. Some models are sustainable for some countries, some are not.
For example, Norway is probably one of the luckiest countries in the world in terms of demographics and geography. Homogeneous, small, european population, more rivers than people, plenty of oil. Given a country like that, sustaining a welfare state isn't that difficult (still, congratulations guys).
Could India sustain the same kind of welfare state? Could Nigeria? I doubt it.

Our welfare state is demolished. In the 70's, 80's being neet in Holland was basically living the good life. In fact, you could just move to South America or something, collect hard Dutch Guilders every month and live like a king there.

The normal welfare benefits are not given to other than Norwegian citizen. We don't kill off non-Norwegian citizens crossing our borders for the same reasons every other country abstain from this practice. Food and shelter being provided can be regarded as welfare, I suppose, but not quite the fitting term.

It is sustainable if you keep you population in check. If you increase your population by 1 or 2% every year with unemployable lazy welfare-tourists from MENA, Africa and Afghanistan it sure as hell is not sustainable.

Only citizens. Refugees arent considered citizens unless their asylum application gets approved. Which it rarely does because Im pretty sure we have the absolute most strict laws the entire EU.

It's not like this drop is going to be continous phenomenon. We have an extremely limited work force and when we figured our oil would reap the most benefit of all sectors in the forseeable future, we decided to put all our brain power into this. This has indeed showed to be good choice, referring to every metric you judge a country by. In addition, Norway, a country of 5 million people, is world leading in offshore drilling and extraction, an industry that is quite profitable. Norwegian engineers are outsourced to ridiculous prices in the oil and gas sector. As long as there are valuble resources in the ocean, we have marketable competance. Now that our own oil is slowly coming to an end, this focus of brain power has shifted. Of course we have a lot of catching up to do still, but it is not like this is a unique observation or something that is not accounted for. On top of all this, we have an enormous pension fund. To make a comparison with Saudi-Arabia is in best case ignorant, and more leaning onto retarded in my opinion.
