I've been to DC and Ilinois and I liked Illinois more, is that a wrong opinion in the United States?

I'm told that DC is a boring company town. Also it has a high black population and the residents have an EXTREMELY high HIV infection rate (3%), even by American Standards. You don't want to live in or near DC unless you're part of "the corporation" (the government).
I also hear that rural Illinois is fine, but I had to pay to use their roads some months ago. I made a second lifetime trip to Chicago at this time, to see a show. I stayed in a cheap motel room that literally had a bullet hole in the window, so yeah.
You can do better than either of those places. The conventional knowledge is that the upper midwest (as in, further north than IL) is better, and New England is about as good as it gets for QOL metrics.
Florida is tasteless, too old and full of drugs, Texas is too hot, CA is too full of spics. If you're going to live in America, live near the border with Canada.

I'm from NJ and I would give my vote to Maine being the best state.
While NJ has a lot going for it in terms of location, food, culture, things to do that are closeby to anywhere really, the fact of the matter is that it's constantly crowded and the taxes are fucking ridiculous.
Maine has beautiful scenery, great food, cool small towns and locales, and even the cities are nice. Tons of stuff to do there for anyone, and most of it outside of the coastline is vast wilderness.
