Originally Italy was the name of just the southernmost part of the peninsula (modern day Calabria), and it may be derived from the legendary king that ruled there (Italus). Then the peninsula took the name from that region, and with the Roman Empire the toponym "Italy" was extended to the Alps and the islands

Back then Portuguese identified with Hispanic identity. After that and the creation of Spain we just said fuck that.

>>
>>58137855
For what I know, back then people thought Lusitania was just situated in Portugal. Later historical and archeological findings revealed that it expanded wesward and not north at all.

What he was thinking is just that. French had the Gaul meme, Portuguese wanted their own meme, so we got one. It's about claiming legitimacy to a land. It's stupid. And imo insulting even. We have no right to claim an identity that is not ours. But it stuck and grew to mean more than just Portugal to be taken back.

>>
>>58140184

I suppose you get closer to pronouncing the "ö" sound with "au". But there could have been other variation like Esterland or something. The evolution of what other people call your country is an interesting thing.

For example, In Turkey and Arab countries they call Austria "Namsa". The only explanation I have found is that during the Siege of Vienna an Ottoman general noted that the Viennese weren't returning fire, and asked an attendant "nam sa?", which apprently means "are they sleeping?" in Turkish and it caught on as kind of a joke, but who knows what the real story is.
>>
>>58140184

It's from old high German "austar" meaning eastern. Apparently the similarity to austral is just coincidence.

I found this website for language nerds (just one Google, man) and they seem to think that the Arabs and Ottomans borrowed the Slavic word for Germany (Némca, Niemcy, and it's variations) and assigned it to the Austro-Hungarians since they were the most relevant Germans at the time to the Ottomans and the Arab world. I guess they didn't feel it was necessary to differentiate between to the two.

That's my two cents anyway, and I think it's a better explanation.

>The origins of the names Buda and Pest are obscure. According to chronicles from the Middle Ages, the name Buda comes from the name of its founder, Bleda (Buda), brother of the Hunnic ruler Attila. The theory that "Buda" was named after a person is also supported by modern scholars.[48] An alternative explanation suggests that Buda derives from the Slavic word вoдa, voda ("water"), a translation of the Latin name Aquincum, which was the main Roman settlement in the region.[49]
>There are also several theories about the origin of the name Pest. One of the theories[50] states that the word "Pest" comes from the Roman times, since there was a fortress ("Contra-Aquincum") in this region that was referred to as "Pession" ("Πέσσιον", iii.7.§ 2) by Ptolemaios.[51] According to another theory, Pest originates from the Slavic word for cave (most closely related to Bulgarian and Macedonian: пeщepa, peștera), or oven (Bulgarian: пeщ, peșt), in reference either to a cave where fires burned or to a local limekiln.[52]
therefore: water + cave where fires burned (= furnace)
that's probably where the dudes that made the map took it from

sure but when you plant eucalyptus you can't use the land for ages anyway. it's mostly used in the following decades just so you can walk and go there. it takes another 30 years for the land to settle down just so it can be remotely used for agriculture.

We'd have to GMO the eucalyptus for extreme winters. Guess we could dig our forests full of ditches to drain them, a lot of our swamps have lakes under them.
That would dump a massive pulse of bio matter and near-acidic swamp water in to the Baltic Sea though, bye bye fishies.
>>
>>58148213
acidic water isn't a problem in cold waters. it is a problem in waters with regular season waters, i.e. waters that get really cold in the winter and much warmer in the summer. but i don't think that's your case. also the lake aren't a problem. in fact i think the main reason your government has done this already is because eucalyptus probably doesn't grow well in there and has other ecological effects.

Austria: Österreich, after the first historical document that mentioned Austria as "Ostarrichi".
We don't know why it's called Ostarrichi though, it's just some place that gave Ausria it's retarded name.

dude it's literally the eastern realm
>>
>>58149969
Osten is East. If anything it would be Ostern (Easter) as Austria was sometimes referred to as Osterland (Easterland). We really don't know where "Österreich" came from, but we assume it was some historical region in Bavaria.

Some dumb italian thought the land was similar to Venice, so Venezuela literally means little venice

Im not sure but i've been looking for on Internet and i found i few theories about the meaning of our country.

Land of Snakes
North Island ._. (By Africans)
Land where metals are forged
Land of Rabbits

And that's it..
>>
>>58133582
Sort of self explanatory..
>>
>>58133582

Catalonia.

It's uncertain, but most probably:

"Land of the Goths"
>>
>>58153051
Or Land of Castles. Terra de Castells. Land of the Goths will be for the Dux Gothia's name if im not wrong. Also there's places who's explain that it came from Italia as the name of Lacetani but someone wrote it wrong and it changes into Catelani by somehow .. =D

I think "Ember-like" is closer.

>has no red on flag

>>
>>58153482

It could be. The goth thing should not be taken as a we wuz, tho.
Ethnically we are probably some kind of mediterranid-alpinid-french-goth rapebabies.
The theory comes from the fact that this place was ruled by Goths for a very long time.
