This, from what a couple of muslims told me at school (granted not exactly a study or whatever but still) a lot of the issues come from the tension between one hand being told they aren't good British citizens by us, and on the other being told they aren't good muslims by their imam (who frequently are people brought over from Pakistan who've never lived here before in their lives and have no idea what it's like to be a British muslim, since the older generation think that's a good idea). Once all these in-mosque politics go away, muslims here can find their own sort of middle ground and develop an identity of what being a British muslim in particular means.

The reason for the radicalisation is less to do with hating the west and more about feeling like they have no identity, since they're neither allowed to be fully western, or just have the culture of their homeland, they feel like they're hated on all sides so they turn to hatred in return as a rationalising process.
