there were fights, rebellions and such but it was all suppressed by the instrument of the Royal Indian Army which was made up of 98% Indian Sepoys(Soldiers).
Then came a man called Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, he led a faction of Indian PoWs allied with the Axis in WWII against the British and after his death(still a mystery) the officers of this Axis allied Indian National Army were tried for treason.
This spread a wildfire of patriotism in The Then Royal Indian Navy, Airforce (they even mutinied) and just before it could spread to the Army\, the brits peacefully left though not before partitioning India into India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal etc.
Answer to your question is India was a bunch of feudal states where the common man was sick of the local rulers who exploited them so they chose the brits who were objectively better(reason why most of the Indians stood with the brits during the 1857 rebellion for Indian Independence) at providing for them(well except for Bengal)before WWII started but the cult of personality that Subhash Chandra Bose had changed everything.
