I remember going on message boards around 2002-2005 and it felt like I was talking to people who could have been my neighbours. and by that I mean upper middle class white people. This could be nostalgia but I remember it being a lot more polite and civil compared to today.

Yeah I remember, I was also here, it wasn't that great. I remember the mid to late 90s internet too,that was pretty good,mainly bc most kids weren't into internet yet.
