Dilma didn't govern during the commodity prices boom, and Lula basically kept the economic policies of the previous not so leftist president until 2008 crisis, and then went with the policies that Dilma expanded and then had to mask economic indicators to make it seem that it was still working when it never actually did.

After the end of the dictatorship in 1985 Brazil entered in an economic instability period with absurdly high inflation rates, prices would go up multiple times in the same day, there was a job whose sole purpose was change the prices of the goods as the time goes. Multiple attempts to control this i flation were made without success. From 1995 to 2003 FHC was the president and his govern finally managed to control inflation. After him Lula took advantage of the stability achieved by FHC but his govern was too focussed in achieving short term results making Brazil looks good economically and the poor people suck his dick but not a good strategy jn the long term. They tried to hide all the shit as much as they could but it finally exploded on Dilma's government. They were trying to protect Lula's image at all cost so they could blame it on others and he could come back as a new hope in future elections when things stabilize again. But seems like they failed at protecting his image too.
