I want to but im still not positive. I still have 1 more year to go so I still have some time but im taking the GRE and the MCAT for the first times this summer and my scores will make my decision for me. If I have a good enough GRE score to get into the chem grad program at UNC Chapel Hill (currently ranked #15 in the US) then ill go for a PHD in materials science, getting into this school is basically my goal in life right now. If it doesnt work out my plan B is med school to become a radiologist or general physician. Im fairly certain I would be accepted into med school but im not nearly as interested and the schooling is much more expensive as opposed to grad school where you are actually paid a $25k annual stipend at most schools just for going.

probably not. The unfortunate truth with chemistry PHDs is that many of them get stuck doing post docs and eventually end up full time professors teaching low level undergrad classes and never get time to do research. Being a professor is a very noble pursuit but it fucking blows working your way up the tenure ladder and you are paid only a so-so wage (considering the amount of education you need until you reach the big boys club at your university). Ive also done enough TAing to discover that teaching is not a passion of mine. The better grad school you go to the better chance you have of getting an industry job and Chapel Hill in particular is known for companies literally coming to the school looking for employees before they even graduate.

in some fields yes. Most schools around here offer a 5 year PhD program right out of your undergrad where as a masters program will take 3-4 years and then around another 4 if you then want to go for your PhD. Chemistry masters are generally not a good idea unless you already have a job and your company is paying you to go back to school and get training on a specific field they need you for. In other situations its just a weird middleground that doesnt have all that much benefit over a bachelors and has less job security than those with doctorates.

its not 100% about the money in this situation. I really just dont want to end up as a professor working my way from the bottom. Not to say that I dislike the idea of academics totally I just wouldnt want to work my way up through academics. For example our research director is the 3rd highest paid person on campus and he didnt start teaching until he was in his 50s and even then only gives occasional seminars and teaches 1 upper level undergrad/grad hybrid class a semester. The rest of his time is spent doing research, approving projects, and awarding grant money. He got to this point working at Sigma-Aldrich at the head of a research team before getting the job offer at our school where he started off at the top. He now doesnt have to deal with the bullshit that other professors do all while he drives a Jaguar to work, wears a Rolex, and Takes his Yacht out on the weekends. This is literally my dream position in life
