Our country's politics have been polarized by regions - probably you can compare to moderate version of Ukraine.
The recent legislative elections brought unprecedented results that broke conventional political landscapes. The ruling party(conservative) was defeated because we realized our president is a dumb useless cunt, voting in favor of opposition democratic party and the newly formed progressive party.

>>
>>57922805
Now that you mention "old codgers", I must ask: Are young Koreans sick of Confucianism in their society, or do they consider it good? What is your take on ajummas and ajussis? Has the time come for a change or will tradition prevail as it has for years now?

Asking out of curiosity, no bias here
>>
>>57920887
dude on the left has a pretty based chin.

>>57923051
>Are young Koreans sick of Confucianism in their society, or do they consider it good?
Most don't.
Ajummas and Ajussis refer to middle aged people. Talking about the deep generation gap in this country, I think it's about the rivalry beween young people and elders- and these ajummas and ajussis are becoming closer to the young ones.

>Has the time come for a change or will tradition prevail as it has for years now?
The voice questioning whether the traditions are neccessities or vice has been rising recently. Economy has been tough, young people are struggling to get jobs and they are told "their problems are due to their lack of efforts". This boils down our ideology: the source of your hardship is in your own, not in the state". The governement, the corporations and the elders manipulate this ideology and in my personal thought, this is what keep our traditions alive. My answer is that the we're in the stage where the majority are setting out to challenge traditions, rather than accepting it. I am not sure if their wishes will eventually be successful, hopefully it could if poltics lead the wave.

>and these ajummas and ajussis are becoming closer to the young ones.

This makes me think that Korea might shine even brighter in the future. Everything should be challenged, traditions are no exception.

>The governement, the corporations and the elders manipulate this ideology and in my personal thought, this is what keep our traditions alive

^ This is probably the no.1 thing that should be challenged. I am glad that there are people like you, who see what is really going on, what needs to be changed and what needs to stay as it is

>And I forgot to be sorry for long answer.

Don't be sorry for that, the more detailed the answer, the better. I like to read about things that interest me, so long answers are a good thing

>young people are struggling to get jobs
Anecdote here, but I spoke with some young people in Korea when I was there and I brought up the issue of unemployment. One person I spoke to mentioned something about most college grads attempting to land jobs in those big chaebol companies like Samsung only to be rejected subsequently. He added on that if these fresh grads just stick to finding more suitable jobs for them (i.e. at their level of experience) the unemployment issue, will not be an issue at all. Is there any truth to this?

>>57925385
Please no need to be sorry :)
>>
why not make him president
>>
>>57928160
I bet he meant this.
>why are you only wanting to get into big corporations? There are jobs you can have in small companies too and lots of them are vacant!
Considering how these small companies treat their employees it is more than natural that so many people are dedicated to limited choices. It also explains the high competition for civil service jobs.
>>
>>57928821
>Considering how these small companies treat their employees
Wow, never knew the flipside of the story. So what you're saying is that, lower (relatively) wages + poor treatment of employees = fresh grads shying away from them, leading to this unemployment issues? Is it really that bad tho?
>>
>>57929114
Exactly. What's worse is that almost every company is looking for someone with experiences and yet if you have just landed to the labour market you need to be HIRED in somewhere to earn experience.

How are things like in Singapore? I once heard connections quite matter there because of the country's small size.
>>
>>57928821
Man, that means you either work you ass off, no sleep, only work to beat the competition if you want to work at chaebols, or you get treated like shit and are on the edge of poverty if you don't beat the chaebol competition. Seems to me like both of those paths are kind of jaded...
>>
>>57929352
Ah yes, the good ol' adage of "need experience for job, need job for experience".

>How are things like in Singapore? I once heard connections quite matter there because of the country's small size.

The best jobs in the country are in the civil sector. Our ministers get paid far more than in any other country to put that into perspective. Connections and networking are still very vital, meritocracy and academics alone can only get you so far if you don't know a certain Mr Lee or Mr Tan.

So it is basically dog eat dog kind of thing? Sounds to me like it is "every man for himself" the moment you graduate, maybe even before that.

Funny how that contrasts with the whole "for the greater good", "society before individual" philosophy you guys have in your country. Or am I wrong?

You are not homogenous but you manage to be one of the safetest countries in the world. We envy your penal system in corruptions.

Heavy sigh. I have seen this in so many societies. Sell the story to the people, make them believe it, then abuse their belief for you own profit. So sad
>>
>>57931237
Friend, when your """"country"""" is literally the size of Sejong city, governance is going to be pretty easy.

Also, isn't like 99% of the people living in Korea ethnic Koreans? If that's not homogeneity then I don't know what is. Unless I've used a wrong word, apologies in advance if that's the case :(

Feeding my curiosity while waiting for a friend to show up, so we can get smashed on beer and a Serbian drink called Vinjak.

How is it living in Singapore? I want to visit sometime in the future, are there nice beaches?
>>
>>57933304
>Vinjak
Is that like some sort of Serbian vodka? Idk much about Serbia, sorry :<

>How is it living in Singapore? I want to visit sometime in the future, are there nice beaches?
Passable if you're middle classed, literally paradise on earth if you are rich. Fucking expensive everywhere, I wholly recommend you take a visit to Thailand or Malaysia rather than Singapore if you're ever in the region. There beaches might be dirtier and rowdier, but they're livelier too. Singapore is safe, expensive and clean. No history to boast about desu, unlike Serbia :(
>>
>>57933644
>Idk much about Serbia, sorry
Didn't expect you to. Vinjak is somewhat like Cognac in color, but different in taste. Pretty strong too. In Serbia, it is popular to drink Vinjak, and then wash it down with beer, to "cool the throat down", but in reality, it is only a shortcut to getting drunk faster.

>Fucking expensive everywhere, I wholly recommend you take a visit to Thailand or Malaysia rather than Singapore if you're ever in the region.
Is the reason you recommend Thailand and Malaysia that they are cheaper?

>No history to boast about desu, unlike Serbia
Our history is nothing to boast about, to be honest. See, Serbia was once a great kingdom, even Rome and Constantinople regarded us with great respect. Then the Turks came and decimated us. After two uprisings, Serbia was great again. Then came the World Wars (we "started" the WW1 btw) and Yugoslavia was created. And then came the 80's and every country that made Yugoslavia started crumbling. The US and their allies recognized that, started stirring Albanians, Bosniacs, Croatians and Serbs against one another, and we got the Yugoslav wars in the early 90's. After that, Serbia (along with other participants btw) became a shadow of its former self.

Now, Serbs look at their history with sorrow and bitterness, knowing we wasted all our ancestors sacrificed their lives for. Once one of the greatest countries in Europe, we are now on the verge of collapse with only a bleak future in sight.

>Vinjak is somewhat like Cognac in color, but different in taste. Pretty strong too
Slavic cognac? Damn, that sounds like some real strong shit

>Is the reason you recommend Thailand and Malaysia that they are cheaper?
Several times cheaper than SG, even us Singaporeans cross the border to Malaysia to get our weekly fix of cheap petrol, food, movies, cigarettes and just about anything really. More "alive" and "unsterelised" too, if that makes any sense.

>See, Serbia was once a great kingdom
That's pretty cool actually, Balkan history has always intrigued me, long and bloody with bits of Christianity and paganism thrown in there. Us... Just another mundane Malay fishing village!
>>
>>57934443
>Slavic cognac? Damn, that sounds like some real strong shit
Oh, it is strong. We LOVE to give Vinjak to foreigners, as the taste is good, but also deceptive, so if you don't have "Vinjak resistance" from drinking Vinjak regularly (which foreigners don't have ofc), you will get smashed in 20 minutes. Many keks were had, Romanians and Hungarians regularly fall into this trap.

>More "alive" and "unsterelised"
Ah, got it. I think I might still visit Singapore, as it has somewhat of a positive stigma here in Serbia, which is a result of a popular Serbian movie in which one of the main characters is doing business with a Singaporean, and those scenes are funny as hell.

>Balkan history has always intrigued me, long and bloody with bits of Christianity and paganism

Oh boy... If I had the time and typing skills, many more posts about history would grace this thread

What language do you guys use? Which writing system?
>>
>>57935040
>we LOVE to give Vinjak to foreigners
Holy fuck, I actually want to try that now, but it'll probably cost me an arm and a leg here, so absolut vodka it is :(

>in which one of the main characters is doing business with a Singaporean
What movie is that, sounds intriguing!

>language
This might surprise most people, but English is actually our lingua fraca here. However as we are also mainly Chinese dominated, Chinese can also be considered a second main language. Officially, Malay and Tamil are also our official languages, but they are hardly used due to the relatively small number of speakers they have here.

>writing system
Latin based for English, don't think I've ever saw Cyrillic here apart from faux Cyrillic at some hipster stores...
>>
>>57935710
>absolut vodka
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Dear God, you have Absolut vodka in Singapore?? I can't believe this! Here, that vodka is considered something to buy IF AND ONLY IF you have no money to buy something else. It is that bad.

>What movie is that, sounds intriguing!
It is called "Tesna Koža" ("Tight Skin"), it is a comedy about social, financial and marital pressures of the main character. His (dumbass) boss is the one doing business with a Singaporean businessman :)

>This might surprise most people, but English is actually our lingua fraca here
Truly surprising. I expected a native one, or maybe SEA one you guys have adopted. It is smart to have English as lingua franca though

Also, Serbian is one of the rare languages to use two writing systems in the world. We use both Cyrillic and Latin, and both are official and understood equally by 99% of Serbs.

Anyway, my friend has arrived, which means I will not be able to use the keyboard in less than 30 minutes. It was a pleasure to have a conversation with you, Singanon. Hope to talk to you again sometime, you seem like a nice person
>>
>>57936176

>>
>>57926393
For what it is worth, He might be an English teacher there. As far as I know, there are a few of Korean users on /int/ who are expats.

Only one native Korean user can speak English fluently, but still his English sounds unique as you can always differentiate it from others.
Besides, there are few Korean users can manage to speak it on the same level as mine.

This guy's English sounds much different from those natives.
