How common is it for Americans to use the setup in pic related for their bathrooms?
I went to visit some relatives in Iowa, and got to stay in their house. They lived in a pretty small city, and had to do this because of something that had to do with their city sewage treatment.
Essentially, you had to throw the used TP in a separate bin, and then also scoop the turds back up and put them in yet another separate bin.
I've experienced the TP thing in hotels in Cyprus, Spain and Greece, but the scoop thing came as a complete shock and I thought they were joking.
Could some American shed some light on this? How prevalent is it?
most people just sit on the turd bin and poop in that and forego the whole pseudo toilet thing but sometimes tradition stands in the way of efficiency
Sometimes we poop in bucket-type containers and just throw it out directly into the community garbage bin.

Plumbing, and infrastructure in general,
is pretty bad in some regions, and huge turds and large bunched up toilet paper can lead to frequent clogging.
Usually a set up like that is only seen in an outhouse, but I could see it happening in someone's home in a podunk town in Iowa. Reason being they probably have city ordinances against both high flow toilets and outside structures like outhouses.

Is it acceptable to defecate in your bedroom (with sanitary protections) if you do not want to use the bathroom (which is shared by roommates) ?
As a personal example I have a "phobia" of using a restroom other people might use, and so in my apartment I have a bowel movement by going into an empty potato chip bag. I throw the toilet paper into the same bag, spray lysol in it, seal the bag tightly, wrap the bag in 2 or 3 grocery bags, put that in a cardboard box, and close it up good. Then at the end of the week I throw those boxes out in the trash outside. I spray lysol all up in the closet and around my room.
Unusual yes, but sanitary measures make it perfectly safe. I am afraid what my roommates would say. I know it is sanitary but I fear they won't think rationally on it.
Please share your thoughts on either my own system, the concept in general, or your personal systems you use to avoid a shared restroom.
