Russia is a country where "a smile a day keeps the doctor away". It also helps to whistle a tune when walking the streets. The most friendly Russians are the sportsmen, you recognize them by their sporting outfit. You'll find the most English speakers amongst them, a common way to get to know them is walk up to them ask if they feel like jogging.. Of course it helps to smile to show your friendly intentions. Another good way to break the ice is to ask them for help with your cell-phone. Russian sportsmen are famous for their technical know-how and will love to show this to a foreigner.
Police (you'll see a lot of different types of policemen there: militsya, ochrana, omon) speak English well and are generally very kind. They love to be photographed by tourists, that is why you see so many of them all over the larger cities.
If you need directions it is best to go to them. Of course it is best to take a map with you, but learn a couple of basic Russian sentences. Just point at the place on the map and say "eto znashit shto ty pidar" to ask for directions.

After talking it appeared that we had common acquaintances, I was living with a Russian family back then. From what he told me he was Serbian, devout orthodox and monarchist. That he was reading the Idiot just now in jail, and that the real idiot was the muslim prophet Muhammed (for this he whispered as the bartenders were Turks), that this was the point Dostojevsky was making.
His demeanor was vivid and passionate, and he came across as someone that didn't shun violence, bordering psycho perhaps, but still not devoid of the ability of being kind-hearted or having a set of morals.
When I glanced at him from the side, he reminded me of a character from one of Dostojevsky's works, a Rogoshin perhaps. A modern version of the 19th century Slavophile. He actually physically resembled a young beardless Khomiakov.
