The Arrow story, as presented in the past few years, buys right into the Canadian psyche of being altogether better than the Americans but kept down so no one can see it. It stems from Canada's continual and desperate search for an identity that isn't defined as "Not American". It leads to people who have no idea about military technology spouting that a large delta-wing interceptor - one whose boasted performance existed entirely on paper - would still be in service today, and would even outperform the aircraft of today. All this on the basis that it was designed by Canadians. It's pure delusion that this would have been anything more than a Canadian F-106, and retired long ago.
