That was our flag 1568-1653, but it was literally called "Prince's flag", so after we became a Republic in 1653 they changed it to red white blue (a different one than we have now, the one in the pic), and literally banned the one with Orange (since there was a big civil strife wether we should be a monarchy and a republic). After we became a monarchy again in 1672, the new king didn't bother to change it so we kept that flag.
But in 1795 the French took us over and installed their colours on our flag. And in 1815, during the battle of Waterloo, the Dutch troops used the Prinsenvlag again(the one with orange).
But our new king never really specified wether we still had the 1568 flag, 1653 flag or the 1795 flag, but the most common one was the 1795.
And with the rise of facsim in Europe, our facsist party often called for the 1568 flag to be put back in place (hence the stigma it has today), so our queen in 1937 made the 1795 one(the current one) official. Since then we have this ugly French flag.

My favorite is Norfolk Island, pic related. Despite the memes, Canada also has a really solid flag. The Australian Aboriginal flag is also really awesome.
