Many of those foods dont seem to be purely Finnish. We have some really great foods like karjalanpiirakka and mämmi but Italian and Japanese cuisine beat us completely.

There's some good restaurants but they're mostly ones that serve newer inventions. There's some top local ingredients that you can do excellent things with, but you can't really expect an ancient culinary tradition from a place that's historically been poor and practically uninhabited.

I've had some nice local meals and they have elements from Scandinavian and Russian cuisine, with the occasional Baltic and Jewish influence. The end result is something that's both distinctive and appealing.
