/int/ is pretty much /b/ with flags, there's literally an entire board for this called /trv/. They're much more experienced and well-versed and can pretty much give you a summary of some realistic expectations.
But just to answer your question seriously. Don't expect to be able to couchsurf. Japanese people aren't generally a very open people to begin with, so it's hard enough to let in a foreigner into their tiny ass homes.
This is especially the case if he's from Romania, which in the ignorant Jap's eyes doesn't really have that good of a reputation.
If I were you, I wouldn't expect anything on such short notice, and would rather go for a hotel booking.
