Why don't Irish people want to speak their language? What's the problem?

Gaylick unfortunately serves almost no purpose aside from muh heritage. The Irish, at least in terms of language, were firmly cucked by the Anglos. Such is life
>>
irish language is ugly and difficult to pronounce

There is no point in speaking it unless you are a medieval language enthusiast, i.e you have autism.

Does it matter? Am I less of an Irish person for thinking so? No

>>57691402

Oh and I might add, Irish people and eastern europeans probably have a different perspective on it since retaining their languages was the only protest they made

Fairly difficult (initially) spelling. Difficult grammar to learn to begin. Small number of speakers.

It's a shame as I speak Welsh. I'd encourage people to learn it.

there's no reason to not at least want a bilingual ireland.

No amount of patriotism could revive a language in a country where everyone already speaks the international lingua franca. It's only going to get harder as time goes on and internet penetration and the effects of globalisation increase.

Irish language was forbidden under English rule for a long time, then the famine happened. People spoke Irish in the countryside because there wasn't really any police to monitor it,but many were bilingual in cities because of British businesses and trade. They would speak English for business and Irish at home (like modern day India). Then the famine happened. Millions upon millions died and emigrated. The famine mostly affected the rural areas and people who spoke the language either died or moved to America where Irish was useless. Then once it was over, the rural areas where extremely underpopulated and Irish was becoming less and less spoke in cities. When the war of independence started, the Black and Tans would beat or kill anyone who spoke Irish. So nobody in the city would dare speak it and people in the countryside would try but eventually the black and tans would find out and kill them. So now you have an entire generation of children who never spoke the language and never learned it because it was forbidden. Then once the war of independence was over and Ireland "won" we were still a commonwealth with the King as head so British trade and immigration continued. Efforts were made to have more Irish speakers and they succeeded but as time went on and multinational companies started blooming and American media was made,English became more and more useful but Irish was pointless. Fast-forward to today where it is bearly spoken because all of Europe can speak English now so there was no benefit economically or socially.

Our English is slightly different to Anglo-english however. We speak Hiberno-english which is the same except we indoctrinated Irish words to our everyday use.

There's something sickening about Irish. The English letters give Irish a familiar look but the marks and senseless ordering of the letters make it queer and barbaric.
>>
>>57694685

It's rooted in medieval attitudes of genocide, they wanted to clear out all the people to turn it into a big farm with more food for themselves

As the Romans always knew, the expansion and maintaining of one's language is the surest way to keep one's civilization alive. Despite a wide variety of languages from the lands they conquered, they were still successful in making Latin the only language of all government and military, even in the east. However the Irish are too lazy to even have their government and military speaking Irish, so it's only a matter of time until reabsorbtion into the superior kingdom next door.

anglicisation or germanisation or italianisation have nothing to do with the usage of modern loanwords, at least not in this context. On the other hand, russians were never under any threat of systematic repression, yet ever since Peter the Great, they took on an incredible amount of loan words.

I don't get this ideal of linguistic purism that my countrymen love so much.

Irish is supposed to be a living language and all living languages import loanwords. Language should be a tool that you use and abuse every day, not some precious gem to be kept up on a high pedestal and looked at every once in a while

>>
>>57696968
While I generally agree with you, I think it's lazy to use a loanword when there is a perfectly reasonable way to construct the word using the language's own roots.
Often though, it can't be done and in those cases, it's quite okay to just use the loanword.
It's mostly just an aesthetic thing I guess.

They're disgusting queerbags and faggots. Marriage isn't a right. Marriage still means something here. Divorce rate is like 16% on the island. Watch your side of the island's rate skyrocket, normalising divorce and leading to a fuckton of single mothers raising little criminal cunts.

I love how you ask the question as if we're all literally refusing to speak our native tongue, like it's some disease, then on comes the british acting like they played no part in it, and are proud of their history and aren't also cucked to the highest order. /int/(segregation) is absolute cancer, kill yourselves please.

>Yeah but I bet you were not as hardcore as us.

We did slaughter 10.000 or so of our own people after the war for being collaborators. Then we declared anyone who had been so much as interned by Nazis to be a traitor, kids included, and banned them from social respectability for the rest of their lives.

Do you think it's the language that makes so many Poles want to emigrate? Are you in truth fleeing those massive clumps of borrowed Western consonants arranged into an order that would make even Slavs queasy?
>>

Brits and the Irish are a carcinogenic stain on fiction literature
And no, before you start "muh Orwell, muh Shelley, muh Chaucer, Shakespeare, Wordsworth". Leave fiction to the French, Russians, Italians. Brits and Germans are good at non fiction. Stay in non-fiction

Stop liking what I dislike

The English are innumerably better than the Irish and the Scots, let alone the Welsh

Imo only Brits and Americans should write fiction. The French are too autistically invested in material detail and the Russians are too interested in politics and sociology. The Brits have a way of portraying the surface of everyday life without going to extremes and agitating for some sort of revolution. And history, I think, has vindicated them: the continent has replaced or paired literature with the social sciences, and only in the Anglosphere is it still alive and kicking in its pure, 19th century form.

The Irish are alright as writers though, they're surrealists and humourists. Scandis are close to Brits in their literary sensibilities, so I like them too, and the Italians, even Germans, have produced works that explore form rather than ideology. But by god, keep the Russian and French classics and their academic supporters here on the Balkans far away from me.
