This is a medieval meme. French people invented perfume and used a lot of it because they would bathe on fewer occasions than their neighbours.
It's true that up until the Renaissance and for some short time after, french people ought to stink like Indians on a date (sweat poorly camouflaged by eau-de-toilette).
However the only inconvenient odors you might notice among french people would be cigarette's breath.
