idk, I never ended up going to beijing for similar reasons. But yeah I'd suggest going somewhere else tb'h. Definitely try and see some countryside and smaller places, they'll all be gone due to old people dying and being demolished for land soon enough. And china seriously has some amazing landscapes and nature, don't limit yourself only to cities.
Xian has a lot of cool historical stuff but it's also a filthy city (there's a coal fired power plant within the city limits, but you'd be used to smog) and watch you're wallet while you're there.
