I just listened in the the Hardcore History podcasts about the eastern front and it is like hell. They invaded the east and did insanely evil shit and then they've lost the war and just trapped. Hopeless sitting there waiting for the Russians to take there revenge.

Poland and Belarus did not lose a third of their population because of the German state but because they were massacred at the hands of Axis soldiers. The Soviet Union lost 27 million people, it is like today's whole populations of the Netherlands and Belgium were exterminated completely.
War is hell, but WW2 was a special hell if you were a civilian. It is not surprising that Polish and Soviet soldiers came back for revenge with such ferocity. In fact there are reports that Soviets tried to stop Poles from committing atrocities... after all Poles had been through, you can imagine what horrors they wanted Germans to endure.
