>>
>>57615060

I think there are enough lawyers, but I'm not against certain types of subsidies.

I graduated from an Ivy with an English Literature degree and I have over 100,000 USD in debt. Should the taxpayer have paid for that? Probably not. If anything, they should have forced me as a gifted person to go into a real program of study.

Why is university so expensive in USA?

I was just looking at the prices the other day and figured out that it would less expensive for an American to live and study in Switzerland ETH then it would be to just pay Stanford's tuition (doesn't cover prices such as food).
>>
>>57615290

Most are affordable, it stands to reason that the most competitive universities in the world would also have the highest tuition.

I'm not convinced that education is cheaper in Europe, anyhow. That's likely just an illusion perpetrated by your taxpayers crowdfunding liberal arts degrees.
>>
>>57615290
Because money is the most important thing in burgerland, thus more expensive =/= better. It's retarded but you can't compete with capitalism.
>>
>>57615377
So are they better or just more eager to present themselves as better to get a considerably larger amount of applicants?

http://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/stats/Education/Spending-per-student/College-and-university#-amount

As I suspected, higher education is more expensive in Europe than the United States. The taxpayer just absorbs the loss.
>>
>>57615370
>Most are affordable, it stands to reason that the most competitive universities in the world would also have the highest tuition.

ETH is ranked higher than Stanford.

>I'm not convinced that education is cheaper in Europe, anyhow. That's likely just an illusion perpetrated by your taxpayers crowdfunding liberal arts degrees.
If you look at prices of private clinics in Switzerland you'll see that practically all of their procedures are less expensive than in good American hospitals.

Also I'm not sure if the Swiss have tax supported higher education regardless foreigners need to pay the full price in pretty much all institutinos because they never contributed to the tax system.

So the price for foreigners is how much the government pays per student i it's tax supported.
>>
>>57615533
>Public expenditure (current and capital) includes government spending on educational institutions (both public and private), education administration as well as subsidies for private entities (students/households and other privates entities).

This doesn't include tuition fees. It's overall more expensive in America.
>>
>>57615580
>If you look at prices of private clinics in Switzerland you'll see that practically all of their procedures are less expensive than in good American hospitals.

That's really weird. I thought this was a discussion about universities, not hospital procedures, which is a completely separate and very unique argument.

>>57615652

In any case, the prices aren't arbitrary. That's a pretty basic principle of market forces.

The European universities you're talking about get the majority of their funding from the taxpayer, whereas American universities like that are more rare.

I'm guessing the funding for elite institutions is generally similar in aggregate numbers. That money has to come from somewhere.
>>
>>57615751
>The European universities you're talking about get the majority of their funding from the taxpayer, whereas American universities like that are more rare

They get their funding from the students.

I always saw it as a no-brainer, state pays someone who cannot generate revenue to get an education and become a part of society. You don't have to pay for liberal arts if you don't want to, japan is cutting that, we just do it because we're rich and enjoy promoting culture.

>I always saw it as a no-brainer, state pays someone who cannot generate revenue to get an education and become a part of society

I'm okay with the government funding education if you can prove it's beneficial to the state.

University itself definitely isn't a no-brainer. I'd rather see funding for technical jobs to augment our economy. The vast majority of degree programs would not be subsidized, which is completely contrary to the European model.

>>57615991
the reason places like sweden have the luxury of ignoring defense is because of america doing it for the rest of the world, as much as ignorant euros want to think of america as evil they have been far more altruistic than they needed to be and the world would be a much different place without them and with russia and china on top unanswered
>>
>>57616174
>>57615991
>>57615941

It's not so much that America is 'defending' Europe, it's more that Europe falls under the umbrella of America's geopolitical influence.

If you were capable of fielding your own military, you'd have your own sphere of geopolitical influence.

We're not fighting wars, we're controlling other countries through the implication of force. Europe is a parasite on the American implication of force is all.
>>
>>57616174
If by altruistic you mean

A. Never helped us
B. Threaten us on a daily basis to join NATO
C. Called for us to join their wars of aggression
D. Expect us to clean up the mess they left

Also Sweden build the world's biggest submarine navy during the cold war, so don't pretend you know what the fuck you're talking about.
>>
>>57616250

If the American sphere of influence didn't exist, you'd either be under a makeshift European one (complete with MUCH higher military expenditures) or a Russian one. That's how the world works.

America should adopt the Australian model.

The government covers all your tuition fees and once you graduate you then pay the money back through your taxes. This way all students are able to access an education and are not left out of pocket once they've completed their degree.

Correct.
>>
>>57615290
>>57615377
You're both wrong. The government interventions in education raised the price. When a government wants to make college more accessible to poor people what they actually end up doing is making sure more people who otherwise wouldn't go to college now get a degree. To do this, the standards have to go down, the dumb stuff that used to belong to high school levels of education now becomes high education material. This makes a diploma a requirement in almost anything and colleges get free additional demand so that they can raise prices.

In Europe, you won't feel this as it's not you personally who will be given a receipt for the cost of your education and you won't be able to end up in a situation that your wage won't cover the costs, but the debt remains, it's just gonna be distributed and felt somewhere else in the state budget. It won't manifest as your individual problem, but it will become a problem for the patients if the healthcare gets cuts because of it, for the workers that will be more taxed, for the local projects getting less funding.

It both stems from the same problem, an educational inflation where the young generations need more and more inefficient education for the same level of actual knowledge that costs more and gives nothing more in return.
