Why is there such a huge difference between Dominican Republic and Haiti?

Mostly with how much of the slave population became citizens. A huge amount of Haiti was populated by slaves directly from Africa, so as a result they got the short end of the stick and got a large, woefully uneducated side and the Dominican which was largely businessmen and really long ago slave owners and Spaniards leaving Spain.

The Dominicans I've talked to on /pol/ all hate Hatians. They're thieves, they come over to the DR en masse, they refuse to learn Spanish, they take jobs from Dominicans, etc, etc.
