Americans think they descend from them via Germans. Also it's a relatively recent interest in Europe, starting from Romanticism and onwards and yet it's obviously less alien and more culturally ingrained than the interest for Asian warrior cultures.
Beyond preconceived notions and Romantic era bastardization, they're actually pretty underrated and understudied.
They're often thought of as Ninjas and Samurai were thought of in the 70s/80s, fiction and biased history coloring what is reported as fact.
