Why was world war 1 so damn traumatizing and sinister? Something about it just makes my stomach turn. It's madness to the highest degree without cause or goal. Just madness and slaugther for the sake of madness and slaugther. At least WW2 had ideology and good guys/bad guys. In WW1 everyone was a bad guy. There was not even a good reason for it.
It must have appeared as the fucking apocalypse to the generation which experienced it.

What is wrong with you? The Great War was a good bit of fun; no bad guys, just good sport. A bit rougher than in past, granted, but nothing too nasty. Come to think of it, the Second World War wasn't too different. Who were the bad guys, apart from the Americans and the Russians, what with their republicanism and communism?
In any event, your so called "madness and slaughter" are necessary for civilisation to advance, and indeed to satisfy fundamental instinctual drives for most healthy humans. Having sworn off that stuff, notice how we've been in decline. The problem with the Great War was not that it was dreadful (it really wasn't so bad) but that it precipitated the death-spiral of Western culture. The only way out of the nosedive is war, openly and honestly. Let's get on it, unless you want the dildo.

It's a modern war fought with modern weapons, but with ancient strategies (walking to the ennemy trench in a packed line, like during the napoleonic wars for example), which led to enormous casualties.
Also the people fighting weren't originally soldiers, many of them were farmers, or factory workers, they weren't prepared for that, so many of them ended up traumatised.

Mostly because generals still had 1800-era mindset, but the weapons had advanced by leaps and bounds since then. Those lead to countless unnecessary deaths especially at the start of the war

They were the lesser evil before Barbarossa they happily divided up Central and Eastern Europe with the Nazis. We chose to fight with the future enemy over the current.
Lend lease was a major force in Europe. Your army would have moved at walking speed without our trucks. The Allied bombings fucked up the Nazis ability to quickly move goods. Stalin begged for the West to open a new front to distract the Krauts. Also, way to forget the whole Pacific, a war which you lacked the resources and technology to fight.
