Typically languages with populations divided by geographic borders evolve to be extremely different like english, Germany doesn't have any geographic borders as massive as an ocean. People who use a dialect in conversations outside of their family are mostly uneducated or trashy. It is not cool speaking with a dialect. Bavaria is an exception, since most people speak with a dialect there (which is disgusting imo). When you hear a person speaking in bavarian, you will always assume they are coming from a rural town or a farm somewhere in the alps. East german dialects, saxon in particular, are considered degenerate and very unsexy. North german, everything along the rhine, hessian and swabian are considered friendly dialects. People from berlin as well, but they are also a bit "cheeky" (Berliner Schnauze).

Different enough that people speaking in them are subtitled when they appear on television. It's mostly elderly people who still speak like that though. Due to television where commonly High German is spoken the dialects have been receding.

Swiss German and Austrian German. They also have their own regional dialects of course. In general, the dialects spoken in South Germany are closer to Swiss German and Austrian German dialects than to North German dialects.

It depends on how extreme their dialect is. The most extreme forms would likely be non-intelligible but as I said - these are mostly spoken by the elderly.
