The EU was a good idea implemented by politicians and bureaucrats who forgot why it was a good idea in the first place and destroyed it with fiscal incontinence, unnecessary regulation and an unproductive "us and them" mentality in foreign relations, especially with Russia. Then along came Syria and dog whistling over asylum seekers to finish the job.

Unfortunately, this issue is pitted as the enlightened establishment against the scruffy reactionaries. This is only true on the surface. There is a legitimate policy question here that amounts to more than just >muh nationalism.
First, it's obvious that the monetary union is a failure, but the UK isn't part of that. Nevertheless, it exposed the fundamental flaw of this system. Remember a year ago when the Greek crisis was all everyone was talking about? Terrorism has erased that, but it's no less pertinent.
And on that note, the free movement of peoples is the textbook answer to how you have a free trade area in order to prevent, for example, manufacturing from simply moving to one place and taking advantage of a higher supply of labor.
But economics textbooks don't consider the reality of terrorism, nor do they consider that far from just being an issue of security or "racism" people have a legitimate right to the continued existence of their native culture. If you think that's nationalistic, ask Swedes in Finland, Catalans in Spain, Basques in Spain, Romansch speakers in Switzerland, Celtic language speakers in the UK and Ireland, etc. etc. etc. how they feel about that.
The result of forcing these swift changes on people is just as much a cause of the xenophobic attitudes as some evil aspect of the population is.
The EU has failed. It was built in "German guilt and French idealism." The UK can leave now or go down with the ship.

And in this case it completely obscures the issue: the design of the EU is flawed, especially economically, but also with respect to security.
The UK would be better off negotiating bilateral trade deals with the rump union.
None of that has anything to do with >muh nationalism. It's the kind of pure technocratic observation the pro-EU people claim to be all about.
They've had 8 years to fix the monetary system and only have applied the smallest bandaids. Germany won't have it and the rest don't have the balls to force their hand.
This still matters even though the UK is on the pound because its other commitments to the EU are affected by the latter's flawed monetary system.

P.S. Being part of the EU means not having €50b to bailout Greece, a member state, but having twice that much to fund refugees from outside the EU who were physically safe once they touched Turkish soil.
