Basically nothing about Africa is taught in schools. Most people in general don't know anything about history that they don't get from movies/videogames/half-remembered classes. The only African civilization that is mentioned, or that the average person in the US even knows, is Egypt. So, being robbed of history or any connection to their pre-slave heritage as they were, of course some of them -- the nationalistic ones, the ones who crave that sort of deep connection to an ancient heritage -- cling to Egypt.

Awhile ago I was reading Hittite history and learned some Hittite royalty married into Egyptian royalty which may mean some Egyptian pharaohs may have had Indo-European ancestry. I tried to look up whether any official genetic studies were done on this but ancient Egyptian history is too hot of a topic, there are too many political groups involved. Egyptians want to supress studies and the official stance seems to be ancient egyptians were all same as modern Egyptians, Afrocrentrists claiming Egyptian were all niggers with the blessing of liberals, and white power loonies saying Egyptian nobility were all white.
