What is it actually like to live in Sweden, memes aside?

Are migrants a big issue throughout the country or just in certain parts?

How are the taxes? Do you get a lot from them?

How is the food?

How do you get to know people? Everyone says Swedes are pretty autistic about talking to new people, so how do you initiate a conversation?

What does the average Swede think of Americans?

I live in Malmö, AMA
>>
>>57503378
I've heard Malmö is basically the epicenter of the migrants, and that it has a lot more crime than it used to. Is that true?

Are there any benefits to the migrants?

What is the city like otherwise?

Are people getting tired of the migrants?

I know the government is supposed to be sending a lot back, but I've also heard that people don't expect it to actually follow through.

How do Swedes meet people? Everything I've read about Swedish culture makes it seem basically impossible to get to know a Swede.
>>
>>57503378
What is involved in an American moving to Sweden? I'm totally willing to learn another language.

>What is it actually like to live in Sweden, memes aside?
It's pretty nice. Winters are depressing though

>Are migrants a big issue throughout the country or just in certain parts?
Certain parts

>How are the taxes? Do you get a lot from them?
We pay loads of taxes, too much I'd say. But we get free education and healthcare, so... I don't know, maybe it's worth it

>How is the food?
Swedish food is pretty bland, and every single shithole has it's own pizza/kebab """""restaurant"""""

>How do you get to know people? Everyone says Swedes are pretty autistic about talking to new people, so how do you initiate a conversation?
I don't know, I've got assburgers so I don't really meet new people

>What does the average Swede think of Americans?
Generally speaking, the opinion on US is positive, with some exceptions
>>

>>

Swedes tend to love latinas and especially brazilian women, dunno why
>>
>>57503837
How common is it for people from countries like America to immigrate to Sweden? What is it like finding a job there? (I imagine it's a bit different for a native than an immigrant, but speaking generally)

Do Americans usually assimilate well?

>>57503928
How would you recommend meeting people if you don't have any friends in Sweden yet? Maybe take classes or hang out at bars or cafes?

I lived there for 3 months, in Märsta which is right outside of Stockholm. It's pretty quiet and comfy. I'd like to move there one day but I doubt it'll happen.
>>
>>57504357
How did you go about making friends? Was that any different than in the states?
>>
>>57504441
Well I was living in a house with a bunch of other volunteers. 2 Germans, another American, a couple from Hungary, an Italian lady and a girl from Denmark.

If you're interested in visiting Sweden but you don't have a lot of money, sign up for wwoof.se. In exchange for work you get food and a place to stay. Highly recommend volunteering at this place called Wenngarn. Tons of great people and it was probably the best 3 months of my life, and the trip only cost me around $1000 (flight included).
>>
>>57504514
That sounds awesome. What kind of work did they have you doing?

Also, how much experience did you have with Swedish beforehand? I'm going to be doing an intensive course but I haven't had a chance to study it very much yet.
>>
>>57504598
Every day was something new tb h. For 3 weeks we just juiced apples and made apple cider. Also spent a few days picking hops which was eventually turned into a Christmas ale. And then the usual stuff like weeding, planting trees... stuff like that. We'd get off work at 4 in the afternoon and weekends were free.

I barely knew any Swedish when I arrived, and because Swedes always switch to English when they hear your accent I really didn't learn much. I'm planning on coming back in the Autumn though and hopefully by then I'll be somewhat fluent.

Good morning!

>What is it actually like to live in Sweden, memes aside?
Great. Very developed country with few problems. I lived a fair bit in Florida growing up and I remember how scared you were of getting sick while being in the USA, hehe.

>Are migrants a big issue throughout the country or just in certain parts?
Most of them are fine so certain parts

>How are the taxes? Do you get a lot from them?
Yes, I support the tax system. I was very ill last summer and thanks to everyone who works and pay taxes, everything from the surgery to the cab ride home was free. It would have cost me about $18.000 otherwise

>How is the food?
Not that great, I mean I eat meatballs and prinskorv etc but I find myself enjoying tacos and sushi hell of a lot more than any Swedish food. Surströmming and Löjrom is 10/10 though. The school food sucks, but so it does everywhere it seems.

>How do you get to know people? Everyone says Swedes are pretty autistic about talking to new people, so how do you initiate a conversation?
Depends on where and how you're asking. Unistudents are about the same as American ones. You don't just approach somebody on the street and small talk. Everyone who claims us to be autistic is probably American. This goes for all of Europe.

>What does the average Swede think of Americans?
Positive view of the people, negative view of the country. Unless you meet some crazy leftists you're fine
>>
Swedes, what will happen to the 46 year old guy living with his cat?

He'll get another whole ton of friendly calls right?
>>
>>57505531
Speaking of university, do you have any experience with student nations? They seem like a good way for a foreign student to meet people.

Also, Löjrom looks like the orange roe that they put in sushi, does it taste pretty similar?
>>
>>57505676
I really wasn't ready for that.
>>
>>57503287
>What is it actually like to live in Sweden, memes aside?
Terrible, to be honest. The living standard seems high, but that's because it's being compared to the whole world. It's not that great here, 2bh.

>Are migrants a big issue throughout the country or just in certain parts?
Depends. They're being placed in the most remote corners now.

>How are the taxes? Do you get a lot from them?
Hahahahahaha...

>How is the food?
Care to specify? Taste? Quality? Cuisine-specific?

>How do you get to know people? Everyone says Swedes are pretty autistic about talking to new people, so how do you initiate a conversation?
Don't know really, most of my friends are from 4chan, but I'd say through mutual platforms. A lot of people in this country seem to know each other from work or school.

>What does the average Swede think of Americans?
The average? No idea m8

>>
>>57503287
>Migrants
I lived in a shitty immigrant area, but even then I currently live in Chicago and I would say shitty Sweden is still not as sketchy as most of the city.
>Taxes
The tax rates are absurd to the point that many Swedes I met wanted to leave with their valuable degrees to simply not get taxed for something like 60-80% of their income when all was said and done.
>Food
Swedish food is alright; traditional, not much in the way of spices. Fikabrod is bretty good, tho; coffee in general is a bit of a way of life. Most Swedes prefer to forsake their local culinary accomplishments to make abominations between thai, kebab, and pizza.
>How do you meet people in Sweden?
You really don't unless you make an effort to do so. Even then, fika becomes an easy way of interacting with people you know on a casual basis.
>What do Swedes think of Americans?
They like us for the most part.

I lived in Gothenburg for about a year.

Don't listen to this >>57509579 guy. He's probably autistic and thus have no friends. You can make friends the same way in the USA, you join student clubs and go to stuff with similar interests as other people. For example my best friends now, both girls and guys I met while watching the Game of Thrones finale with like 50 other people in a bar in Sthlm

>what's it like to live in sweden
bretty gud if you can handle the occasional hardcore leftist and comitting a social suicide if you fuck up the bus stop ettiquette.

>Are migrants an issue
just in certain parts. Malmö, göteborg and Rinkeby being the worst parts where they refuse to learn the language, get a job or assimilate.
Stockholm has their fair share too, but Stockholmers themselves(non migrants) tends to be far leftist up the ass with gypsies around most streets.

>How are the taxes?
High. But hey, free healthcare is pretty cool.

>How is the food.
No one will say anything if you leave food on your plate, but they'll judge you regardless if the food is disgusting or not.
Food is good, but it's a very "Food is still food, only sissies complain" kinda deal to it.
Naturally, if you live in Sweden, you will at some point eat surströmming or take part in a kräftskiva where you'll eat tons of crayfish. So that's always exciting.

>How do you get to know people?
Through friends friends, through the workplace or uni. You can get to know people by spending time at a pub as well.
>How do you initiate conversation?
"What's your name?, what do you work with" etc.
Sometimes, someone will make a minor and almost unoticable reference to something, as to which you are to respond in a similar fashion by also making a minor reference, they will pick up on this, and you've pretty much made an aquantiance on the spot.

Other than that, the autism meme is real. Chances are that if you meet a stranger on the train that has maintained eye-contact with you for over two and a hald seconds, chances are that they are a serial killer and intends to use your skin as a blanket while they sit in their affordable IKEA chair at home in front of their TV.

>What does the average Swede think of americans?
Loud, fat, hamburgers, dumb but kind. We'll of course treat you like people, but we'll talk to you like you've never had a salad or heard of the metric system before.

Free healthcare is a very old term dating back to the early socialism ideas and it's not something your fedora tipping ass can change. Don't think you are smarter than everyone else. It's not free, because you pay for it by taxes. Or you don't, and your neighbor does.
>>
>>57512368
thats my point. so its not free, and at least in here the public healthcare is completely useless, its understaffed and for going to doctor if you have a cold or something you might have to wait for weeks, and to dentist years.
>>
>>57503496
You don't live in Malmö, it's not segregated at all. Stockholm on the other hand...

>>57503287
It's absolute shit and yes migrants are a problem. The justice system has basically stopped working with most policemen having quit or on their way of doing so. Civilian groups are patrolling the streets and girls are recommended to stay inside in most parts of the country.

The government has gone mad and is out of control, the taxes can be up to 80% and all they fund are social welfare for immigrants since healthcare and infrastructure has all but completely collapsed. Approximately 1/20 people in Sweden is just a refugee without citizenship living on welfare and another 1/5 are immigrants who usually live on welfare.
>>
Malmö is pretty much on par with your "white" cities in terms of demographics
so by comparison to the USA: very white
with white European countries: very non-white
