As I said there is not a definite border between Southern and Central Italian culture, it's more like a continuum. In my opinion language and history are good reasons. Sicily is culturaly and linguistically completely different from Southern Italy, yet it's universally considered Southern (unless you separe Insular Italy from Southern, but Sicily and Sardinia still have nothing in common), because of the Two Sicilies.
