その前に、公共交通が便利な都市で絞っていけばいいと思うよ。車を持たないだろうし、視野を広げたい気持ちになるからいろんな訪れるべき観光地が近い場所でないと困る。あと、生活するには他人に頼らずスーパーとかに徒歩かバスで行けるような場所と言えば、やっぱしそういった都市かな。

Depends where you're coming from. Prices for most things are about the same as home for most Australians. Rent might actually be higher in many parts of Australia (without adjusting for size, just by matching type of accommodation), public transport and taxis are more expensive per distance but Tokyo is higher density so you don't have to go as far anyway. Pretty sure utilities bills are lower, too. Food is cheaper in Japan, alcohol is much cheaper. Only things that are more expensive are meat and fruit, really.
Not sure what you mean about "living comfortably" in smaller cities. There's just not much to be doing, long-term, for a Westerner in a place like Himeji or Matsumoto.

I'm not considering moving to Japan. I've been there to study before and it's a nice place. I might like to work there for a while at some stage, if there's anything suitable. After all, I have learnt (and continue to learn) the language, and I have a variety of friends and acquaintances over there. Also I like the food.
There's a marked difference between what I have done and would be doing in Japan (going there as an Australian, living there for a while as an Australian, and leaving again as an Australian; and doing so not to suck out money or resources, but rather at what is likely to be a net expense to myself) and what is of concern to me regarding immigrants (coming to Australia, arrogating to themselves status as a "real" Australian, and never going back to their own country; sucking up public services, not paying taxes, and diluting the nation and the culture to ruin it for future generations of actual Australians with no other nation to call their own).

I would like to see the removal of non-Whites who can't do that, and if they're immigrants or the descendants of post-federation immigrants, if they are citizens, I'd like to see them stripped of that and then removed. But I don't have a problem with non-Whites being here; just with them being here and pretending to have a right to be treated as real Australians when they've no interest whatsoever in discarding their foreign culture in favour of ours.

Legit question here: do I take Japanese and German at uni or German and Politics? I enjoy Japanese and don't want to stop learning it, but feel it would be shit to end up with a double language degree, and I'm not even sure if Japanese is useful for anything at all.
