MIT, Caltech, and Stanford. Everything else is pretty much shit tier degree mills.
>>
>>57405417
I respect anybody who went to an Ivy honestly. Even if you're getting in via legacy or affirmative action you've got to do a massive amount of work and earn excellent grades. The quality of education at those schools is impressive

I would say Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, William & Mary, and UVA are the best schools in the area where I grew up
>>
>>57407862
Also not OP but no. You seriously fucked up.
>>
>>57408068
It'll be fine. Just give it a year or so. I don't know about your specific situation, but I had a hard time moving away from home for college as well. It's really an entirely different environment, and kind of a shock to the system. But after you do it once or twice it gets much easier and you adjust much better.
>>
>>57408198
I don't think he seriously fucked up, though I do think he made a mistake. UCLA's not that much better. I just don't know why you'd avoid a school just to avoid being exposed to a viewpoint you don't like.

I went to Cal, graduated in 2015. The place is imploding from the inside out.
All the attention of course gets pointed at the retarded SJWs running the place, but that's not even half the problem.
If we didn't have a fucking retarded chancellor and garbage athletics program that thinks spending half a billion dollars on a stadium and athlete-only training centers is a good idea, then maybe our school wouldn't be completely in the shitter.
My last straw was hearing that they were going to potentially disband the college of chemistry, probably the most prestigious institution within the university, just for the sake of a minor cost cutting measure.
Fuck those assholes, they aren't getting a dime of donations from me until they stop dumping all the money they're given into a pit.
>>
>>57408271
Not the safest campus as well, a factor since I went at 16. Also LA is closer to home but I don't have friends so it doesn't really matter.
>>
>>57408424
>>57408271

I avoided it not because I didn't like the viewpoint but it seemed practically institutionalized by the administration. Not going to pretend UCLA is great in this regard but the Chancellor did tell the ASU to fuck off when they demanded the same thing they got at Berkeley.
>>
>>57407862
UCLA is just as saturated with SJWs as Cal. There's no avoiding them anywhere in the UC system excluding shit schools like merced.
Also, Berkeley is a way more chill and livable area than Westwood. UCLA is all pavement and high rises, where Berkeley actually has character.

>>
>>57408585
It's ridiculously expensive but just as bad as UCLA.
It definitely has skyrocketed in the bay area in the past few years though. I was paying only $920 a month for my studio apartment right across the street from campus thanks to rent control from 2013-2015. When I moved out they were renting it for $1350 a month, and I checked recently and they were renting units for $1500. The market is just out of control.

I studied in Vienna which was excellent as I got to fuck Turkish girls for four years and develop a race fetish. I did my year abroad in Leeds, which was good fun despite living with some of the strangest people in the world.

Finally I did my graduate degree at Oriel College, Oxford and since then have done large amounts of very little for huge financial reward. Even better, I got through university without being shot, having to share a bedroom, attending a stupid made up "sport", being a quarter of a million dollars in debt, having mandatory classes on black people or getting graded with letters like a 5 year old.

Maybe in compsci, but in biomedical research UCSD gets more NIH funding. I'm a 3rd year student already on a Nature paper, another in review. Published a 1st author paper in a Cell press journal last month (impact factor 12)

UCSD is pretty good in certain fields. My PhD program ranks higher than Stanford.

i dont think you understand that the university you went to doesnt matter nearly as much as you think it does compared to your achievement and intelligence. for most fields, it matters exactly none compared to your accomplishments, and admission is not an accomplishment. perhaps in law and business there's a certain amount of nepotism but that involves rich people hiring their children and friends. perhaps a stanford degree can get your resume a second glance but if it says nothing else you are fucked

I guess the best uni here is either uni melbourne which has the 8th best law degree in the world or ANU which is ranked number one in Australia for research or something. Universities here have large endowments that generate funds. Stanford, for example, has like $21B. People also often donate money specifically for scholarships.
>>
>>57410287
Also, to be fair, it's not like a university actually pays anything for financial aid--they just don't charge you. Their marginal cost of letting in another guy is pretty small, though of course they may be losing a paying student.
>>
>>57410227

>>
i like how people will complain about professor wages

"wow that professor makes $200,000 a year, what a ripoff!"

if you look at the data, wages for professors as well as the general number of them has not changed that much since when tuition was more reasonable (there are more adjuncts but they don't make much)

the biggest ballooning cost at universities has been in administrative staff, that has SKYROCKETED over the last 20-30 years (counselors and other staff)

for comparison's sake, Aarhus University in Denmark has a roughly similar student population to that of UCLA (slightly bigger at Aarhus). Aarhus University has an administrative staff size of 11,500; UCLA has 26,139 administrative staff.
>>
>>57410399
So i guess they have to take in their percentage of rich paying kids.
Do you have to be a good scholar to get in or is it enough to be able to pay the full tuition?
>>
We did have couple older undergrads going to Chicago and Stanford though.
>>
>>57410480
you have to be a good scholar for the ones we're talking about

there are a ton of small private liberal arts schools that charge like $60,000 and it's more if you're able to pay you can get in (some get financial aid obviously)
>>
>>57410414
Some of them are, we have English "schools" that are basically visa factories and if you study finance at any university its going to be almost all Asian but the actual degrees are okay.

They are trying to integrate the international students more as well since they just clump up into their own groups and never properly learn English. I don't care since they generally don't shit up arts/law with poor communication skills and they pay twice what an Australian would pay.

>>
>>57410472
I'd say housing is what makes college more expensive tbqh
>>
>>57410480
You always need to have good grades/whatever test you needed to take for your program. All universities say they do "need-blind" admissions. That is, they say that they don't take into account whether you can pay or not. But I would be stunned if they don't at least look at your parents'/relatives' ability to donate to the school.

I also don't think that they struggle to find paying kids. The rich tend to go to the right prep schools, get the best tutors, the most parental assistance, etc., so they're the ones who get in anyways.
>>
>>57410561
tuition here is on an order of magnitude higher than in Europe

you pay for tuition and room and board separately
>>
>>57410472
>>57410561
I watched a documentary called the ivory tower and it said it was a combination of administration and the race to give the best "College experience" with great living facilities and so on that ballooned the cost without actually increasing the value of a degree.

it's also to some degree related to the fact that the US population has grown like 40% in the last 4-5 decades and the amount of people attending universities has skyrocketed

generally when people think of what schools are driving debt they think of Harvard, USC, etc. that have these insane prices but most students who attend those schools get significant aid and get good jobs so they don't have issues. the problem lies with certain private schools that are really expensive and don't prepare you for anything as well as (this is a big one) lots of kids who go to school for one or two years, take on some debt, and then drop out. the latter is a major problem because they pay a decent amount of money for some college but then don't do anything with it

Usually a lot of the salary comes from grants the professor earns. That's TAX PAYER money
>>
>>57410472
They're overpriced because teaching at university level is a flawed concept to begin with, these aren't your typical adults teaching children a crash course in history but rather experts in their field that quite frankly have better shit to do. Money is the only real allure.
>>
>>57410993
>>57410994
yeah most of the salary comes from research

Young prodigies usually peter out, likely because they were only ever accelerated vis-a-vis their peers, who eventually catch up.

UCSD here studying STEM, while it's fucking awesome for grad school and research, don't expect them to actually teach you anything practical, especially if you're an engineering major. You're gonna have to work your ass off with extracurricular projects (as you should) to learn as much hands-on stuff as you would at state schools like Cal Poly or even SDSU.

Also, you're gonna have to put in effort to have a good social life. But all I mean by that is you're gonna have to put yourself out there, share your common interests, and not be shy. You'll hit it off with others and you'll be able to do whatever you want to do, be it kick-backs or party-hardy 30 weeks out of the year. Just don't expect UCSD to give you a social life (even the frats have to fight for it).

Tons of Asians, so having yellow fever is a plus. Ton of neets too, but they won't bother you if you don't bother them (they stay in the library anyway). A lot of the Asians are smug FOBs though, so don't expect anything positive from them (literally rich_chinese_kid_starter_pack.jpg).

Other than that, school is nice. La Jolla is nice, and the surrounding suburbs near the university are convenient and affordable with living in groups (or you're riding financial aid like me). Having a car and an ID which says you're 21+ makes things a lot better, San Diego is the GOAT beer city and the Mexican food is on a whole other level. RIP baseball fans, though...
