The biggest fault of Transport Tycoon was using only 32 bit signed integer for money. Every time you gain more then about 2 147 000 000 pounds your money turned to - 2 147 000 000.
I had to raise mountains and destroy them just to throw away extra moneys.
Does modern open source version has that issue?

The biggest fault was that nobody was going anywhere with a destination in mind and you could just move people from one stop to another one you built right next to it and drown in money.
They still haven't fixed this in OpenTTD, but I think there's an experimental plugin that fixes it more or less.

I usually made most of money by driving coal as far as possible and as fast as possible (cos you get money per square of distance but price is lowering with a time). So most profitable was coal monorails between opposite corners of map.

Once I tried to create the longest train tunnel, connecting both sides of the largest map the map creator allowed. It costed so much that I was PAID 2 dollars after building it.
