I had MGD for the first time a while ago, it was okay. High Life wasn't anything special. I haven't even ever had regular Miller or Lite. Not sure why you'd pay a premium for an imported beer that isn't of high quality.

Around the time I was about 24 there was an explosion in craft brewing. In my state at least, some German guy came over back in the 80's and people then started competing with him. His beer was almost a unicorn, mythical thing until people caught-on.
