The point of the war was to invade Canada and forcibly annex it to the United States. The hawkish members of Congress got a first hand taste of reality when instead of being welcomed with open arms and flowers, their vaunted (and ill-equipped) militias were fired upon by pissed off Canadians, many of whom were descendants of loyalists who fled the American colonies after 1783
America sacked and burned York (now Toronto) but back then it was a glorified frontier town. The British sacked Washington and by the end of the war controlled the entire eastern Seaboard. The only reason they didn't prosecute the war further was because they fulfilled their objectives (Forcing the US out of Canada) and because Parliament was weary of heavy taxes and continuous war. Had they decided to go ahead and prosecute the war, the United States would simply have been reabsorbed into the British Empire; the American government was highly unpopular at the time (to the point where New England seriously considered seceding), reintegration with the Empire would have been a smooth affair.

In the final analysis, we won the military engagements, but lost the political side of the war.

The US lost Vietnam, but on the field with superior air power US/AUS/SVN forces usually won day by day. We weren't "gaining ground" because pushing into North Vietnam could have warranted Chinese or Soviet retaliation. I would counter that the Chinese made it quite clear in Korea that they did not (and do not today) want a US-controlled state bordering them. Maybe the PVA wouldn't come rolling out in full force in the initial entry, but the farther north we pushed and the closer to the chinese border we got, the stronger the chinese response would be. They fought us in Korea when they knew we had nukes, what would make them back down in their own backyard?
