Isn't 4chan blocked in Mainland China?
No, likely because so few Chinese come to 4chan, 4chan itself isn't blocked. However, because Google services are throttled and the captcha is owned by Google, in order to post, Chinese posters must use a 4chan pass to bypass the captcha, as it never loads.

Nothing much recently. HK trip isn't until later next month. I'll probably be returning to Zunyi for a few days next month as well. Also considering a trip to Xinjiang but that's rather uncertain. This weekend I might go to Nanjing, although because I'm feeing 摳門兒 I might try taking the 40 kuai bus instead of the high speed train, but we'll see..

From what I've heard the ethnic tensions in Xinjiang can be tense at times, although I think it's not as bad right now as compared to how at has been at certain points in the past. The security tends to be quite tight, of course.

Now that I think about it, I might actually put off Nanjing until next weekend because I just checked and of course, by now most tickets are sold out. Train tickets aren't too bad in terms of price, it seems. About 300rmb for a round trip.

How do Chinese/Japanese dictionaries work?

For example, if a Japanese person sees a kanji he doesn't know, and wants to look it up in a dictionary, how does he do so?

And to my understanding, with traditional chinese caracters you can use the radical of the symbol to look it up in the dictionary, but how difficult is this in practice? And what about simplified Chinese, how do you use dictionaries for symbols you don't recognize?

It's not difficult to check Chinese dictionary at all, just find the radical and count the number of stroke of that character, characters in dict. are arranged in ascending order according to the no. of strokes.

what's the easiest cunt-eye language to learn?

i would imagine indonesian/malay because no tones + latin alphabet, right?
>>
>>57169946

Simplified Chinese is the same way. You look up the radical, they're organized by the number of strokes, and then you look up the character based on how many strokes the rest of the character has.
>>
>>57170786
I've heard several times that Indonesian is one of the easiest languages to learn (at least, for a Westerner).
>>
>>57170482
It's obvious for most characters, like this character has 8 strokes
>>
>>57170786
Probably Vietnamese since those cucks were forced into a Latin alphabet
>>
>>57170786
Whichever one you're interested in.

Learning another language, even a simple one, is no easy task. Motivation and raw interest are the biggest deciding factors in how long it takes you to get a good grasp on a language.

A weeaboo who eats, sleeps, and breathes Japan will probably learn Nipnong speak quicker than you'll learn Indonesian as a normal guy just looking for an easy second language to tackle, despite how much more there is to Japanese than Indonesian in general.
>>
>>57170882
Vietnamese is a tonal language though, those are difficult to grasp for Westerners.

Hmong is pretty easy

They use the Roman script like Vietnam except without all those ugly tone markers.

Their tones are marked with letters on the ends of words.

-b = high tone
-j = falling tone
-m = glottalized
-v = rising

So neb, nej, nem, and nev are all pronounced the same, they just have different tones.

How hard would your languages be for someone who's native language is 7 cases, 7 tenses, four moods, three genders, more irregularities than some languages have dictionary words, coarse "clitic-ized" pronunciation with merciless amount of vowels, gazillion dialects...
Grammar-wise, not vocabulary (because our vocabularies are terrestrially apart)
Just showing above I'm used to some hardcore shit. English was a cake walk for me, Romance languages (currently learning Portuguese) seem pretty intuitive and much easier. Man, even Turkish seems easier

Hard. English is easy because it's a latin-based language with grammar that is essentially a simple version of yours. Chinese is just completely different.

Example: If you say you want a hot dog in English, you can say 'Hot dog', 'hawt dawg', 'hoot dog' or some shit like that and everyone will still know what you're saying. If you want to order 肉丝 rou-si in Chinese but you pronounce it like 肉刺 rou-ci, no one will understand what the fuck you're talking about.

Also, tones matter, a lot. When I first learning Chinese I went into an arts shop because I wanted to pick up some ink to practice calligraphy, I was talking to the shopkeep and asked him where he kept his ink (mò 墨, means Chinese ink), but I didn't pay attention to the tones (thought the context would make it obvious), so I kept asking him for 摸 (mō, to touch). He had no idea what the fuck I was saying, after 5 minutes I found the ink and pointed it out to him, he said 'Oh, 墨!' and then gave me a lesson in how to actually pronounce that shit.

Honestly most of my Chinese progress is because of screw ups like that + drinking in 茶馆 + dating a 党员

>>57172726
German is a dead language soon anyway.
Learn Mandarin or Spanish, it is actually useful.
>>
>>57172726
I would take German. Mandarin is really useful, but quite a headache. First of all, the tones–I'm a korean, and we don't have tones to distinguish between similar sounding words (unless it's a form of dialect). The chinese exchange students at my school are trying to teach me mandarin (passively of course), and I'm having a hard time. Also, writing.....I know simplified characters are supposed to be easier, but they're still quite difficult to learn–I've tried before and failed miserably.

German, on the other hand, has difficulty in pronunciation and a complex grammar system, but I think it's easier than other latin-based languages like french and a HELL of a lot easier than Mandarin. Also, it uses the same alphabet (more or less) as English, so there's no new system of writing to learn.

>>57173137
I had problems learning the characters too, but I found a nice book which explains loads of characters meaning and history. It is called fun with chinese characters, and it gives good pictrograms to roughly 1000 common charactes.
Learning this made it a lot easier for me. Also I think that traditional characters are easier because the pictograms are still more visible.
brb finding a good screenshot.
>>
>>57173364
I don't think german is considered to be a romance language. If you're not up for that, then go for korean :P pretty easy; we have a constructive alphabet system and NO TONES to stress over
>>
>>57173488
Idk, I find german a lot easier than mandarin. Syntax, grammar, writing, reading, speaking–all of it seems easier to me. Also, apparently mandarin has no tenses?

Yes, it's really that bad. I'm not joking, the mainland Chinese are terrible human beings in general. There is a reason why they are universally despised by Hong Kongers/Taiwanese/Singaporeans/basically all overseas Chinese, as well as all of their immediate neighbors.

They are loud, rude, inconsiderate, back-stabbing, unprofessional thieves. The mainlanders do not give a single fuck about anyone outside their immediate circle. Ask anyone who does business in China or works with the Chinese and they will tell you exactly this.

It may sound like I'm exaggerating, but this has been my experience and the experience of everyone else I know who speaks Chinese or does business with them. If you come to China expecting mountains swirling with mist and traditional temples with gardens hidden around every corner and people practicing their traditional instruments and past times left and right, you're in for a shock.

I have an extremely positive opinion of the Chinese who move abroad - they are hard-working, disciplined people who keep their heads down and genuinely make their host country a better place. But you have to remember that the immigrants they let in to the west are the creme de la creme, they're not letting in the nongs and the shitheads who run rampant in China, they're only letting in the smart, educated, driven ones. Keep in mind that there is a reason why those Chinese emigrated in the first place and then refuse to go home, and I'll wager that money isn't the only motivator.

When mainland Chinese people abroad make way more money than the natives, have a far lower crime rate, and much better education... I start to suspect that there are a lot of decent Chinese people.

The thing is that I always got the impression that the rural parts of China were much better but simultaneously worse. It's sort of where in the west if you go to the suburbs or small towns, things just get quieter, people are friendlier, more hospitable, more nature around and such, but there's still a basic infrastructure and they're reasonably clean. The places I went to in China, the character of the people was certain friendlier (they still had the same extremely bad habits, I chalked it up to culture but it's hard to ignore it after a while), but the infrastructure was extremely poor or non-existent, and disease was a legitimate fear because of the lack of basic sanitation.

I have to live in China for my job, so I've been looking for a relatively developed place to move to. So far I've got my eye on 恩施, which looks quite nice, though I was thinking about Xiamen, Yunnan and Guangxi as well. I would only be worried about the dialect if I moved down near nam/Burma. Really though, when it comes to business it's not a very fun place to be. You really have to watch your back, moreso than anywhere else I've been to (which includes Mexico/Saudi Arabia/Europe/Singapore/Taiwan and several others).

Idk, I still have faith in China. My girlfriend is a really smart lass, when she found out about the interactions I was having with the other Chinese and the extent to which they were trying to cheat me all the time (these aren't just my anecdotes to her, she came with me a few times on trips to help with translation), she said she had no idea that those types of people existed in such numbers, and that she felt embarrassed as a Chinese person to have these sorts of people deal with foreigners. None of her friends are like that, they're all upstanding people. Gave me the impression that there are a few tiers of Chinese society that don't really interact with each other very much.

Alright.

Usally with americans, you'll say "WAIT WAIT WAIT" as not to get shot. Is there any equivilant in Mandarin?
>>
>>57180663
It's a country that has developed from $200 per capita in 1980 to $8500 per capita in 2016. But a lot of that money is in the hands of the upper classes like in America. So development happens in the cities, while nothing happens in the rural areas.
Let's just say they developed economically faster than they did culturally or politically.
You have a bunch of newly rich people who for the first time in their life can now go flaunt their wealth a visit places.

I wouldn't call Chinese as nice as Japanese or Western Europeans. I just think there's a huge culture/wealth gap. It's something that will take time, and its foreigners duties to point out their shit.

But there's way too much sinophobia of Chinese when, as a 46 year old, I have seen the same in the late 80's and early 90's with the Japanese.

In twenty years the new fear/hate will be for Indians and ASEAN. Then Africans.

>恩施, which looks quite nice, though I was thinking about Xiamen, Yunnan and Guangxi as well

I'm sorry. I can't help. Sometimes we have a native mainlander come to these threads and he's well-traveled in China. (A sinoboo). Ask him and he'd probably provide more information.
I'd honestly talk to expats in China. There's forums for them on the internet.

>she said she had no idea that those types of people existed in such numbers, and that she felt embarrassed as a Chinese person to have these sorts of people deal with foreigners.

I've heard that Chinese businesses/salespeople have a tendency to screw over foreigners. There's some xenophobia in China and a very laissez faire attitude to business. If they can screw someone naive without good legal backing (most foreigners) they'll do it.

My experience working with Indian companies is similar to that. But they are far less competent. The Chinese deliver an inferior product. The Indians don't deliver one at all.

Those are all things that other Chinese readily admit mate. It's a very serious problem. The government has also commented on it. The milk powder scandals, Mattel lead paint stuff, sewer oil, fake eggs, fake medicine, the Fellowes case and most recently the Ezubao case (among others) are just the most publicized stuff.

I had a colleague when I was working in Tianjin who was working for a western company. He was saying that he goes out of his way to try to buy non-Chinese grown food for his daughter because he was so spooked by the food quality in China. We also got to talking about China's culture, specifically about the tendency to act like 小皇帝,我行我素,不管别人 sort of behavior, and in his explanation to me as to why things got like that, he was saying that he wasn't sure how to bring up his daughter. On one hand he could teach her to more 'western' in her outlook, that is to be more open to helping others and to be just more considerate in general, but if he did that then he was afraid that she would be taken advantage of her entire life if she remained in China. On the other hand, he could teach her to act 'Chinese' insofar as adopting more of an every-man-for-himself attitude, but then that would contribute nothing towards fixing the problem.

Yes China has some good and some bad like everywhere else in the world, the problem is that the bad ones are far more ubiquitous than elsewhere in the world, and when it comes to business, the law is poor at protecting victim.
>>
>>57180947

Yeah, you say 共产党百万岁,打倒小日本!to appease the apparatchiks

>>57181199

I think a lot of the problem (at least when it comes to business) stems from the fact that China became a big market so quickly, it got flooded with relatively naive westerners. If you're a peasant who just came to the big city, $20,000 would be a LOT of money, easily more than you could make in a decade as a farmer. I would be tempted to screw people over too, it's just too easy.

I'm actually extremely fascinated by how the GPCR/Mao Era influenced modern Chinese business attitudes. I'm sure that destroying family dynamics, moral foundations and fostering a more individual or at least guanxi-focused outlook on life contributed, but I haven't found any good books on the subject.

>My experience working with Indian companies is similar to that. But they are far less competent. The Chinese deliver an inferior product. The Indians don't deliver one at all.

I've heard this as well. When I was talking to some of my Chinese colleagues about the problems with the suppliers, they were saying that while the Chinese will try to give you something that resembles what you want, the Indians just don't care one way or another. One was frustrated, telling me that a day, a week, a month's delay means nothing to them. They just sort of shrug and keep doing what they're doing. I've never had any personal experience with India though, so can't say for certain.

East Asianboo here. How much of the destruction and loss that China suffered during the disgusting "Cultural Revolution", can be repaired? I know the government is helping in rebuilding structure that were destroyed, but the enormous amount of historical records destroyed, especially family histories, is no doubt going to be near impossible to recover.

For me personally, the Cultural Revolution is the most devastating even in Chinese history since the Confucian purges enacted by Emperor Qin. Just my opinion.
>>
>>57189064
Yeah it wasn't as extensive or destructive as many in America think.

What people forget is how much familial ties and culture survived the cultural revolution.
They also seem to blame it for culture, monuments, and religious views that were lost from 1890-1970.
Many powerful Chinese were reformers who blamed their culture and system for the centuries of humiliation. The Nationalists and Communists alike.

If anything, ever since the cultural revolution China has become more and more like "old China".

The other day I was at a Chinese Restaurant and had the rudest service I've ever experienced in my life.

When we were ready to order I tried to make eye contact with the waiter who was sitting behind the counter doing nothing. When I finally caught his attention he just pointed sullenly at the counter and looked away. So I walked up and ordered there.

So our food arrives and we're no more than 5 minutes into our meals when he walks up to us and shoves a card machine in our faces and says

>"I go downstair now for dinner, you pay now"

Me and my mate are shocked, this has never happened to us before. So we stop eating and fumble through our wallets while he taps his feet and stares impatiently. He then grabs the card off us, puts it through and leaves without saying a word.

I don't know if there's a completely reliable one, but I use ExpressVPN. Astrill is popular as well. A friend also uses Vypr. There's also guides out there to setup your own VPN, which is a lot cheaper and possibly more reliable than using a VPN company's.

So guys is there even a chance Seoul can survive a North Korean attack or is it just a matter or time before the city is leveled and millions die? I know America can obliterate North Korea but not before they launch everything and destroy South Korea. Is it just a matter of time before they all die? Is the South Korean government doing anything to prepare for this?

Neither side wants to restart the war. The North knows they'll lose, and even if they won, they'd just have a 90% larger shithole to live in. The South isn't actually interested in acquiring the economic death sentence that is reunification.
>>
>>57237071
fuck the reunification, the US can't figure out how to actually destroy North Korea without South Korea taking huge casualties. There would be more refugees from South Korea than North Korea if an all out war (which its going to be all or nothing) actually occurred

I'm in china now, and this is true.

I loved China when I first went on vacation here. I went to Shanghai and had sex my first week with a qt Chinese girl, had dates lined up every day with girls and thought this was a pussy paradise, I was impressed with all the skyscrapers and such, thought China was awesome as shit and was the next big thing.

Now after living here for probably almost 3 years, you realize what a shithole it is, lel

The majority of non-Chinese sinoboos are surely those who have never set foot in China, or only went on vacation here for a couple weeks and fucked a few chink girls, or the outright delusional.
