In Japan, we used to have lots of overnight trains running across all over Japan, but a number of the trains has been much decreased nowadays.
We have still some overnight trains. The one that runs the longest distance is Twilight Express. This train runs between Osaka and Sapporo. It takes 22-23 hrs, but this train is very popular among us, so it's difficult to get train ticket somewhat.
I want to ride this train in near future.

Shin-Kansen is good, but I agree it's too fast, so I like conventional trains as well.

I've gone by car from Tokyo to Hiroshima. Car trips are very different to going by train because one can make whatever detours one wants, stop and start at will, and carry a lot more things, too. The reason a train journey appeals to me is that one is "on rails", so to speak (literally, too, of course). Also there's no need to concentrate on driving, which is nice. I feel like it would be pleasant to relax and enjoy the scenery along the way, get off to stretch one's legs and spend a day seeing things in whatever town, and then start over the next morning, over and over again for a week or two.

I think the reason the train ended its operation is because of Hokkaido-Shin-Kansen that also recently started its operation.
There is a railway tunnel between the main island of Japan and the north island. Until Hokkaido-Shin-Kansen was launched, it was for conventional trains, but now it is for Hokkaido-Shin-Kansen.
It's good to see new things with the cutting edge technology, but it's sad to see that it replaces something old.

I live in Shitamachi area in Tokyo. Some people feel comfy on Shitamachi and claim we should keep Shitamachi as it is, but it is known that Shitamachi is too dangerous when a big earthquake happens.
My town has a plan to replace all old buildings with one big skyscraper and one big park in a certain area in front of rail station, but some residents complain about it too much, so the plan is often interrupted.
Roads are too narrow, so fire-tracks can't go for burning house, and people lost their life because of this.
